Summer Edition
2011
Dear LACHSA Community,

I hope that you've all had a chance to rest, relax, and rejuvenate throughout the course of the summer.  I've had the chance to see many students in the last few weeks and it reminds me of the importance of my work-to do everything to ensure our students have the best experience possible.  It also reminds me of how much I miss all of them.

The strength of LACHSA depends, in part, on the support of our families.  During the month of May, you perhaps recall receiving an annual appeal letter from alumni parent and Arts High Foundation President, Laifun Chung.

This past week, if you have not already contributed, you should have received the Foundation's second request asking for a gift to support our arts programs.  As the new school year approaches and as the excitement and anticipation builds, I want to ask you again to support LACHSA to the best of your ability.

Last school year was unprecedented in terms of parent giving to LACHSA.  Our parent community contributed over $350K to the Arts High Foundation to support LACHSA's art programs. We hope to exceed last year's goal in both total funds raised and in participation.  Last year more than 50% of parents made financial contributions; we are aiming for 100% participation for this upcoming year.

Please know that your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law and every penny will be directed per your request.  No amount of financial support is too small; however, if you are able to support LACHSA at the Angel level - a gift of $1,500 or more - that would be terrific.

Now as never before, as economic uncertainty continues, we will again need to rely on philanthropic gifts from private citizens such as you to ensure our arts programs remain second-to-none.  So please use the gift/pledge form and reply envelope to send in your tax-deductible contribution today, as arts chairs and I are currently working to finalize budgets for the upcoming year's activities.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration and I look forward to welcoming you all back to another school year!

Sincerely,

George Simpson

Principal

P.S. And for those of you that have already given in response to Laifun's letter, on behalf of the entire school community, I extend sincerest thanks.

LACHSA Goes to China

China

LACHSA is proud to offer students opportunties to travel the world.  As a leading educational instition we recognize the importance of aquiring cultural knowledge and creating international connections.  We believe that it is essential for our young artist scholars to have opportunites to experience  educational opportunities beyond the classroom in order to expand their understanding of the world, build competive college applications, and become cultural responsive adults prepared to contribute to the 21st century.

To this end, In October of 2011, LACHSA will welcome students from our new sister school, The Hangzhou High School for the Arts in Hangzhou, China.  Our visiting guests will attend classes in both arts and academic, stay with LACHSA host families, and explore the cultural riches of Los Angeles side by side with LACHSA students.

Student Exchange Opportunities for LACHSA Students

In April of 2012, LACHSA students will travel to Hangzhou, China over spring break.  During the twelve-day program, participants will engage in Chinese cultural workshops, attend arts classes, and travel to important cultural and artistic sites in China.  High school credit will be given to participating students as well.

Recruitment will begin at the start of school.  While this opportunity will be open to all students at LACHSA, priority will be given to students enrolled in our Mandarin language program.

For more information about how to apply, please contact Academic Dean Cara Livermore at clivermore@lachsa.net.

We are pleased to announce that Encompass will partner with LACHSA to provide a unique service learning opportunity for LACHSA students.  Using theatre for social change, Encompass supports schools to increase their effectiveness in addressing bias in the classroom.

Previously a pilot program exclusive to theatre students, this new partnership allows juniors and seniors from all arts majors to participate during the morning schedule of classes.
