Follow-up from Race to Nowhere
Race To Nowhere On March 27th, Parent Council hosted a screening of the acclaimed, educational documentary "Race to Nowhere".  Representatives from all stakeholder groups (parents, students, teachers, administrators) shared this experience.

Group discussions were held directly after the screening to address some of the issues presented in the film and brainstorm ways LACHSA's parents, faculty and students can work together to cultivate a supportive learning environment and avoid the pressure to "Race to Nowhere" .  In doing so, we joined the national dialogue on student achievement and how our children define success in a high-pressure, competitive world.

A very special thank-you goes to our guest panel, who fielded questions and provided some unique insight in the often emotive situations presented.

We've Only Just Begun

In a world of instant gratification, it is very difficult to be presented with some hard truths and realities and not feel overwhelmed because we can't "make it better overnight".  However, there is a renewed commitment on behalf of all stakeholders to make changes.  Parents have asked how they can get involved now.  We strongly recommend adding your voice to the Race to Nowhere campaign to see changes in legislation of educational standards that are unrealistic - that no longer promote learning but rather test preparation.  Students are encouraged to speak to the counselors and administration about day-to-day situations that may overwhelm them.  Parents have asked Administration and Teachers to re-evaluate homework policies, particularly over weekends and school breaks.  Parents have been encouraged to protect their children from over-extending themselves unrealistically (particularly a challenge with our self-motivated, ambitious students).

Additional Resources

If you would like more information and ideas on how to continue this dialogue, we encourage you to visit www.endtherace.org.  Numerous resources are also available to download from our website, www.lachsa.net (Parent Information / Parent Council / Race To Nowhere).  Explore them.  Utilize them to better inform and equip yourselves.  Most importantly, know that this discussion goes beyond LACHSA, Los Angeles or even California.  It is a national dialogue to restore the love of learning - one that needs your voice.

Let's continue the discussion for change.
