LACHSA
February 4th, 2011
Dear LACHSA Community,

It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I write this message to you.  Our beloved biology teacher and long-time faculty member, Phyllis McQuery will be leaving LACHSA as of today.
Ms. McQuery's husband of many years passed suddenly during our recent Winter break.  Ms. MsQuery will be moving to New Mexico, at least in the near term to live with her daughter and granddaughter.
For twenty-five years, Phyllis McQuery has been part of the rich tapestry of LACHSA history.  Her broad intelligence, quiet dignity, and relentless devotion to her students has garnered her the highest degree of respect and admiration from her colleagues and students.  On a personal level, I have always been inspired by her professionalism, mentorship, and friendship; she is indeed a role model, not only for educator's like me but for all those who aspire to a better self.  For this, and on behalf of the entire LACHSA community, I thank her for her service and her inspiration.  She is and will always be a part of the LACHSA family.

Beginning this week, Ms. McQuery's two science classes will be taught by Mr. Jay San Augustin.  Mr. San Augustin has been closely associated with LACHSA for several years and holds teaching credentials in social studies and biology.  He has been working with Ms, McQuery and Cara Livermore to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for our students.  Although he is more than suitable to lead these classes he will have those very "big shoes" to fill and as a result I ask that we welcome Mr. San Augustin in this new role.

This will undoubtedly be a difficult time for our students and not simply for students who are currently in her classes.  Many of our students have had the pleasure and privilege of learning from Ms. McQuery.  We will do everything possible to help our students manage Ms. McQuery's absence.  Please let us know what we can do to support our students. If any of our students do have difficulty with this for whatever reason they are directed first toward our counselors Irma Dilullo <idilullo@lachsa.net> and Princess Broussard <pbroussard@lachsa.net>.

Ms. McQuery plans to return on Friday, February 11th to say goodbye to faculty faculty and students.  For students who wish to contact her before or after her visit they are encouraged to write to her at <pmcquery@lachsa.net>.  We will also accept hard copy notes in the main office and deliver them to her.
Although one could not portend the tragic events of the recent past, I am reminded of our historic 25th commencement ceremony on the grand stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall in June 2010.  We acknowledged Ms. McQuery then for all of the reasons outlined above and many more.  This year, if nothing else, has shown us how uncertain life can be.  This past moment of celebration, in honor of Ms. McQuery, was and is well deserved.  We love you Phyllis McQuery.
