Victory in Rural California
Employment Discrimination Case!

TLC is pleased to have helped Deanne Boyd address employment issues in California's Lake Arrowhead region.  Deanne, a skilled maintenance worker for over 18 years at Rim of the World School District in San Bernardino County, was subjected repeatedly to name calling, harassment, and the intentional usage of incorrect name and gender pronouns.  Additionally, dangerous maintenance problems on Deanne's truck went unrepaired for months - a grave concern in this rural area, especially during the winter.

After TLC contacted the school district, it agreed to institute a policy aimed at eliminating discriminatory and harassing comments by its employees, as well as to address the safety concerns with Deanne's truck.  "I love my job and I didn't want to lose it.  But I also didn't want to be harassed anymore, and I was scared every time I drove my truck when it was broken.  I was so frustrated that no one would help me.  I didn't know what to do.  Finally, I contacted TLC.  I am so grateful  that it was able to help me."

Profile of a TLC Monthly Sustainer:
Jackson Bowman
Jackson Bowman

Originally from Wisconsin, Jackson has lived in San Francisco for 6 years. As a Program Manager for the Adolescent Trials Network at UCSF, he coordinates HIV prevention, youth empowerment, linkage to care, and policy advocacy programming for LGBT youth. Jackson Bowman signed up to be a monthly sustainer for TLC when attending May's Transgender Leadership Summit.

In his own words:

Equality, parity and justice have always been driving principles for me, in both my work and my life. Striving for those goals has taken on different forms, from volunteerism to grass-roots organizing to policy work, but the end is always the same; to help create a world with less discrimination, hardship and need. One of the most important ways I can move this effort forward is to support the work that local organizations are doing in my community.

That is why I have chosen to become a monthly sustainer of the Transgender Law Center. The work that TLC does is essential to the well-being and equality of transgender people statewide. No other organization is as committed to our needs, and no other is as worthy of our support. Please join me.

Help make our Anniversary Celebration a success!

TLC depends on our annual event to sustain our advocacy work and legal services. We need your participation and the help of the full community to make our 8th Anniversary Celebration a success!
Here's how you can help:

1) Ask your employer to sponsor the Anniversary Event!

If you have a trans-friendly employer, please contact Paige Kruza, TLC's Development Manager, at 416-865-0176 or paige@transgenderlawcenter.org for sponsorship materials and help in approaching your employer. Corporate sponsorships account for much of the revenue that makes fundraising events successful, and corporations are more likely to support non-profits that they employees support.

Sponsorships are available for $250 to $20,000, and include a variety of marketing benefits.

2) Join the Host Committee!

Learn more about the host committee at an orientation on Tuesday, September 14th, 6-8pm at TLC's San Francisco office. Dinner provided. Please RSVP to Paige.

What YOU get for being on the host committee:
  • Invitation to the VIP reception
  • Your name(s) listed in the event program, website, and promotional emails (publicly demonstrating your support for TLC's legal services and advocacy work)
  • Support and promotional materials from TLC staff to help you succeed
  • An exciting excuse to talk about your commitment to gender justice and transgender rights with your friends!
What you commit to: bringing yourself and 9 (or more) guests. If you aren't sure you will be able to bring 9 people, we encourage you to team up with a partner, friend, or co-worker and each commit to bringing 4 guests (plus yourselves).

Ready to sign up?
Email Paige
your preferred email and your phone number.

Sign up to be on the host committee by September 1st
to be listed on the event website from the start!
