The State of Transgender California Report is here!

Dear Friends of TLC:

We are pleased to announce the completion of The State of Transgender California Report: Results from the 2008 California Transgender Economic Health Survey.  This unprecedented report highlights many issues facing transgender Californians, including poverty, workplace discrimination, barriers to health care access, educational disparities, and housing challenges.  Drawing on the data collected, The State of Transgender California presents a number of concrete policy recommendations.  It is our hope that this report will bring attention to the challenges facing transgender people while raising awareness of the many assets they bring to California's communities and workplaces.

The State of Transgender CA
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made The State of Transgender California a reality. Huge thanks to everyone who completed the survey, helped with the data analysis, provided input and edits, and contributed much needed support during this labor of love.

Please share The State of Transgender California far and wide!  Give it to your local, state and federal representatives.  Share it with your school administrators, your employers, your health care providers, and your fellow community members.  And, if you have any questions about the report, please drop us a line.

The report is available on our website at http://transgenderlawcenter.org/pdf/StateTransCA_report_2009Print.pdf. To request a presentation on the survey findings, implications and policy recommendations, please contact Kristina at 415-865-0176.

Critical Hearing on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act Tomorrow!

Tomorrow, we will be one step closer to passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). The House Education and Labor Committee will hold a full committee hearing on this bill and the importance of protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees from workplace discrimination. We are grateful to the lawmakers who will hold this hearing, including Committee Chairman George Miller, and to all who will testify. TLC has submitted written testimony, along with our new report The State of Transgender California Report: Results from the 2008 California Transgender Economic Health Survey.  This is a critical moment, and we must make our voices heard.

We have been here before, but success has never been closer. ENDA has been  introduced in the House and Senate several times since its debut in 1994, but each Congress has failed to send it to the President. Passage of ENDA is urgently needed and long overdue. According to numerous surveys, 60% of likely voters in the United States support a federal employment non-discrimination law that protects people from discrimination based on both sexual orientation and gender identity. With our visible and vocal support, we have every reason to believe that ENDA is finally within reach.

Right now, Congress must hear from every one of us! Congress must feel the pressure and feel the urgency to act. We must pass ENDA in the House, then advance to the Senate!

We have public opinion in our favor. Many U.S. corporations already have workplace non-discrimination policies in place and support ENDA. And, importantly, President Obama has committed to signing this bill as part of his civil rights agenda. We must urge Congress to take speedy action to place ENDA on the President's desk.

Workplace discrimination is a real problem that affects real people. LGBT employees work just as hard and contribute just as much as other workers, and should not have to fear losing their job because of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. No one should have to choose between their job and their gender.

Congress must hear from you that ENDA is a priority -- that you want it and that you need it. If you haven't contacted your Representative and your two Senators, please do it today. If you already have, please do it again. It is up to all who care about equality to pass this bill. ENDA's time is right now.
