Staying Healthy Throughout the Seasons
|
With much ado in the media about the H1N1 flu virus, it's more important than ever to ensure that one's bodily defenses are strong. In Chinese medicine we call the immune system "wei qi." Wei qi is made by our spleen/digestive system. In fact, approximately 80% of our immune system resides in our gut. The wei qi is distributed by our lungs as a protective barrier against invading pathogens.
I would far prefer to keep my digestion and immune system strong than to get an untested flu vaccine. For more information on the drawbacks of the vaccine, please check out the following article by Dr. Mercola.
In addition to acupuncture on a regular basis, the following tips can help you feel your best and save trees/kleenex at the same time.
Top Ten Tips for Staying Healthy Throughout the Seasons

Herbal Support for S.A.D.
|
As the sun starts setting earlier and earlier, so too can our moods take a dip. Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) affects a fair number of us Minnesotans. Herbal therapy works well as a preventive medicine for helping to ward off S.A.D., and it's as easy as taking one drop of an herbal tincture one time per day for six weeks beginning in September. Call 612 872 9133 to make an appointment soon for a seasonal acupuncture tune-up and be tested for the right herb for you. |
Equal Access to Acupuncture
|
On May 7th, 2009 Governor Tim Pawlenty signed this bill into law, and it took affect as of August 1st. The Equal Access to Acupuncture law states that if an insurance provider/plan covers acupuncture performed by an MD or DC, it would now have to cover acupuncture performed by a licensed acupuncturist. This law is also a memorial to Edith Davis, a pioneer in the Minnesota acupuncture community. Edith passed away one year ago at the age of 87.
Check with your insurance company to see if acupuncture is covered, and if there are any limitations to the coverage such as needing a doctor's referral or if only certain conditions may be treated.
I am currently not in any provider networks, but I will provide you with a superbill which you can use to get reimbursed from your insurance company. Check with your insurance company for the appropriate forms for reimbursement.

Recipe of the Month
|
Avocado and Tomato Gazpacho
My husband and I both love to cook, and we spend quite of bit of time perusing recipes. One of my favorite cookbooks, Recipes for Self Healing by Daverick Leggett, just so happens to be a book that also explains the basics of Chinese medicine in a beautiful and simple manner. Each recipe, in addition to being tasty, includes the energetics of the recipe.
September's recipe, Avocado and Tomato Gazpacho, takes advantage of the abundant tomatoes and cucumber that we're harvesting from our garden.
