OLV 25 PictureWhat was I Thinking?
By Winnie Martinez, OLV faculty member for 25 years
Twenty-five years ago, after previously teaching kindergarten and 4 year old preschool, I decided to now become the first third grade teacher at a brand new school named Our Lady of the Valley.  What was I thinking? I was excited to be a part of the first new Catholic school to be built since the formation of the Diocese of Birmingham.  I was thinking I was up for the challenge!
25 years ago I was living in Crestline and driving each day to OLV and back.  What was I thinking?  I was thinking I would have time to make a relaxing drive against the traffic while I listened to my 2 young children giggling in the back seat.read the entire article

More News from Our Classrooms

Grandparents Day Grandparents Day Second graders recognized and thanked Grandparents for all they do on September 4th.  This special day was our way of letting grandparents know what an inspiration they are in our lives.  It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about our heritage and family traditions.  The day began with lunch in the Social Hall.  Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to set up and clean up the Social Hall.  Also, thank you for the delicious desserts and refreshments.  After lunch, grandparents were given a tour of the second grade classrooms.  This was followed by an always exciting Show and Tell by the grandparents.  Everyone enjoyed the day with the many talents and stories by the grandparents.

Physical Education Our Physical Education Department has a wish list for two items: paper cups so students can have water while outdoors and Band Aids.  If you can help, drop off your items by the PE office. Thanks!

Middle School Literature Circles are in full swing. Novels are being read and discussed in 5 sections. Each section includes vocabulary. read the overview

School Wide Unit Bon Voyage on October 7!
We can hardly wait until October for our school-wide unit!  This year's unit is all about math and is guaranteed to be so much fun that our students won't even realize that they are learning at the same time.

Math Quest 2009 is already underway.  The eighth grade mentors last week briefed their younger travel group members on the four destinations they can choomath questse to go to on a virtual vacation: New York City, the Grand Canyon, skiing in Denver or Orlando, Florida.  The groups met and their destinations are set; now the real fun begins.

Over the next two weeks the different travel groups will get together and plan their trip - keeping tabs on expenses all the while thanks to the spreadsheets designed by our seventh graders.  On the day of the quest they will travel together from room to room visiting such virtual destinations as Wal-Mart (using currency), AAA (map skills), rest stop (estimation), packing room (combinations and volume) and snack shop (fractions) ... just to name a few.  We are excited for our trips and are looking forward to our October 7th bon voyage!

Please encourage your child to keep up with their ice cream cards because lost cards will not be replaced.  Also, please encourage your child to walk carefully to their seat after receiving their lunch tray.  If we have to replace a lunch that is dropped by your child, you will be billed.  We realize that accidents happen but usually dropped trays are the result of running or horseplay.  Until now we have been replacing them at no charge, but we can no longer absorb this expense. Thank you.
