A Message from the Ashby Village Board Chair

For a long time Ashby Village was just a concept and the dream of several local residents. Our vision was to create a virtual community where volunteerism and community spirit would help aging seniors stay in the homes they love.  All our hard work is going to pay off soon with the launch of Ashby Village services and programs in Berkeley, Rockridge, El Cerrito, Albany, Kensington and Emeryville. In July Ashby Village will officially begin offering programs to members including referrals to our new Provider Network. Don't be left out of this great service. Join today! Visit our Website - www.ashbyvillage.org - for a membership application. Or call our office - 510/204-9200 - for more information.

What our members are saying about Ashby Village and why they joined:

-          Gloria Bayne: "I like the concept of a support system that provides services which make it comfortable and convenient for seniors to stay at home."

-          Charlotte Herzfeld: "The needs that Ashby Village fulfills are presently not available in the community. I joined because I think the Village concept is important to my community."

-          Darryl Katz: "We believe in supporting the Village Concept and look forward to meeting fellow members."

Welcome Gloria, Charlotte and Darryl!

Ashby Village in the News

UC Berkeley Professor Andrew Scharlach was recently interviewed about his research into aging in place and the Village Concept for Social Welfare @ Berkeley where he kindly mentioned Ashby Village.  Professor Scharlach's interview can be seen at  http://socialwelfare.berkeley.edu/ on page 2. Thank you Professor Scharlach. We all look forward to the results of your research.

We Need Volunteers - Can you Help?

Ashby Village needs volunteers to provide services to members - everything from cooking an occasional meal to driving members to doctor's appointments to helping do yard work. Do you have 3-4 hours a week to donate to your community? We also need clerical help in the Ashby Village office. If you'd like to help with any type of volunteering, please send an email to

info@ashbyvillage.org. Thank you!

AV Committees Are Hard at Work before Launch

Ashby Village has developed a strong committee structure to support our members:

-          Membership Committee: welcomes new members, organizes house parties, and provides regular check-in with members.

-          Social Events/Community Development Committee: arranges all social, cultural and educational events like our speaker's series.

-          Volunteer Committee: Works to recruit and train new volunteers to provide services to members.

-          Program Services Committee: Recruits new providers, manages and ensures good provider service, develops and manages all services to members

If you would like to join a committee, please send an email to info@ashbyvillage.org or call the AV office at 510/204-9200.
