What our members are saying about Ashby Village and why they joined:

"I have seen too many people slip into a closed-off and lonely old age, and I myself am not about to go gentle into that not-so-good night. For me, Ashby Village is a starting place for options, opportunities and openings into community." - Ann Martin, new Ashby Village member

Great News! Ashby Village Hires a Full-Time Executive Director!

The Ashby Village Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Andrew Gaines has been hired as our first Executive Director. Andrew will be formally introduced at the Members' Meeting on August 8th and will begin work on September 1st.

Andy will be oriented by our Interim ED Janis Brewer who, as planned, will depart AV on September 15th. Andy comes to AV with many years of management experience in the nonprofit world and degrees in both Sociology and Counseling Psychology. Andy has worked extensively with aging populations and holds a deep respect and passion for helping seniors live in safe and supportive communities. Please help us in welcoming Andy into our community, and join us in thanking Janis for a remarkable job as our Interim Executive Director.

Free Vision Services

The Lions Center for the Blind provides vision rehabilitation services and life enrichment courses to help people adjust to vision loss, increase their independence and maintain quality of life. If you are having trouble reading, doing tasks around your home, walking around independently, or if your vision problems are interfering in any way with your life, the Lions Center can help. Services are free for anyone experiencing vision loss over 55 and residing in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties.   Call Tina Coffield at 510-450-1580 for more information.

From our Event Committee

In July members met for a delicious and lively lunch at Cafe Leila in Berkeley. The Rockridge Library was the setting for an interesting and informative Computer Workshop where we learned the ins and outs of Social Networking. The Committee is taking a well-earned rest in August. There are already many exciting activities that we are scheduling for the Fall, including dinner and Jazz at Yoshi's in Oakland, Wine Tasting at Vintage Berkeley, attending a play about Emily Dickinson at the Berkeley City Club and a Pot Luck Dinner at a member's home.  We hope you will join us at these Member Only Events. Exact dates and locations will be in our next Newsletter and on our Website.
