Support Responsible Firearm Use on Federal Land
Vote "Yes" on the Gosar/Gibbs/Altmire Amendment
Congressmen Gosar, Gibbs, and Altmire have offered an amendment to H.R. 2354, The Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, to prohibit the Army Corps of Engineers from enforcing any regulation that keeps an individual from possessing firearms on Army Corps of Engineers Water Resource Development projects. This amendment is similar in language to H.R. 1865 and would help end the patchwork of firearm laws and regulations that govern different federal lands managed by different federal agencies. The National Rifle Association strongly supports this amendment. On May 12th, 2009, bipartisan legislation was overwhelming passed by a vote of 247-149 and later enacted into law to make it legal to possess firearms for self-defense on National Park Service and National Wildlife Refuge System lands. This legislation greatly expanded areas where law-abiding Americans can legally carry firearms for self-defense. However the language didn't include millions of acres of recreational land managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps owns or manages over 11.7 million acres, including 400 lakes and river projects, 90,000 campsites and 4,000 miles of trails. Adding projects managed by the Army Corps of Engineers will not only allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves, but relieve them from the onerous responsibility of tracking where one federal agency's land management jurisdiction ends and another begins. The National Rifle Association respectfully asks you to support the Gosar/Gibbs/Altmire Amendment to protect gun owners' ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights when they are legally camping, hunting, and fishing on Army Corps owned or managed land. Due to the importance of this issue, votes on this amendment will be considered in future candidate ratings and endorsements by the NRA Political Victory Fund.
