God of glory, Lord of love;

Giver of immortal gladness,
fill us with the light of day!"

Greetings!

As the summer winds down, you may be  returning from, or in the midst of well-deserved vacation time. What a blessing in the midst of a hectic life! In this last month of the season we will focus on ways to 'step away' on a regular basis.
        Enjoy!

Step Away
A vacation that takes you away from it all is a wonderful salve for many wounds. Both physical distance and time apart are helpful healing opportunities for body and soul.

Many of us have had a chance this summer to take vacation, and that often helps us begin the fall program season with renewed energy and insight. But, once we re-immerse ourselves in the work to be done... oh how quickly and easily we shed the gift of peaceful centeredness that came while we were on vacation. Without taking the opportunity to step away on a regular basis we are likely to get caught up in the whirlwind again. Before we know it, we are yearning for rest and the kind of wise perspective we enjoy only when life is balanced.

It is possible to step away from it all, even if there is no vacation time looming on the horizon. That might mean disciplined commitment to taking a weekly day off, or scheduling a personal retreat. But sometimes it simply means finding a way to intentionally step away even if for only a moment. Stepping away can mean escaping to an out of the way corner of your building and saying a centering prayer, or retreating to your car in the parking lot for a brief time-out. It can mean a focused breath prayer in the middle of a meeting, or taking a walk down the hall at lunchtime.
Creating our own unique ways to step away will assist us in remaining sharp, focused and well balanced.

How might you step away from it all today so as to give yourself and those around you the gift of new insight and perspective?

How might you embrace the practice of stepping away in the midst of your daily schedule?

Dear Sharon,
I feel I am at a crossroads in my life. I have fantasized for a long time about starting my own landscaping business. But doing that would mean leaving my present job which provides me with a good salary and benefits. I don't hate my job, though I don't really like it either. I am a very responsible person, and don't feel like I can just quit to fulfill a fantasy. But, the idea of starting a landscaping business keeps tugging at me. Do have any suggestions as to how I can resolve this dilemma?

First I want to say: Congratulations for your boldness! The fact that you are articulating your vision is a sign that you may be ready to craft a personal plan to create the professional life you want for yourself. Though "just quitting to fulfill a fantasy" may be irresponsible, putting a strategy in place to get from where you are to where you want to be is a wise way to take charge of your life. Here are a few questions to ponder:

Is there a way to begin your landscaping business that will not require the extreme sacrifice that concerns you?

How much of your present security are you willing to give up to get what you want?

What essential groundwork might first need to be laid for your new business to be viable? How might you accomplish that?

What resources are available to you?

Intentional planning is an invigorating way to own and embrace your life's dream with focus and determination. Discern...plan...and go for it!
