From Where You Are...To Where You Want to Be

 Quote of the Month
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then, go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
 ~Harold Thurman Whitman
Prayer of the Month
"Come, Spirit, come and be a new reality. Your touch is guarantee of love alive in me. When constrained by thoughts or things, hear the word the Spirit brings: life is larger than it seems, hope is harbinger of dreams."
~Miriam Therese Winter

In the Christian Church we have now entered the 'Great 50 Days of Easter'. What a perfect time to consider the need to come alive...to ourselves, our work, our relationships, our commitments. May the spirit of resurrection be embodied in your life!

Enjoy,

Resurrection Life
Resurrection Life...what an incredible concept! Often we focus our conversations on the topic around loving God and believing in Jesus, and miss out on the opportunity to explore Resurrection Life as a real and radical life-style option.

Resurrection Life is not about feelings or beliefs, but about stepping away from the experiences and situations that entomb us, and boldly moving into the garden of possibility. It is about embracing present opportunities with courage and looking forward to the future with a sense of optimistic curiosity. It is about Coming Alive!

What makes you come alive?

How would your life be different if you focused your time and energy on those things that make you come alive?

How can you experience a greater sense of resurrection in your life today?

Dear Sharon,
I am a Financial Counselor for people who are dealing with severe financial problems.  I like to help people during difficult times in their lives. But lately, I am starting to feel burned out. I am both physically and emotionally exhausted.  I work hard to find good solutions for people in trouble and I  always stay at work after hours so that I can be there for those in need.  I lie awake at night worrying about my clients and wondering how they are going to manage. Many of my clients return more than once because they have made the same mistakes again. I used to feel compassion when this occurred, but lately it just makes me angry. I think what I do is important, so I don't want to abandon my profession. But, I also realize that can't live like this any longer. Do you have any suggestions about how I might find balance in my life and begin enjoying my work again?

The scenario you describe is not atypical for someone in a helping profession. You believe in what you are doing and deeply care for the people you are helping. But somewhere along the way you became enmeshed in the lives of your clients. You have begun to process their problems as if they are your problems and their mistakes as if they are your mistakes. You are wise to recognize that continuing on this present path is not a healthy option for you, or for your clients.

It may help you to begin thinking of your clients as capable and resourceful human beings who are responsible for their own decisions. Honor who they are by offering your expertise, while resisting your desire to make it all better. You can't 'fix' people ... that is up to them. You are a valuable resource, ...a blessing for others. You are not a solution...the savior of their lives.

You may also want to intentionally engage in a new interest or hobby that is not related to your work. I know you are feeling exhausted, so adding something new may sound unrealistic. But it can help on the path to realigning
your emotional balance and restructuring your time commitments.

How might you begin to disentangle yourself from the stressful lives of your clients?

What is your unique area of expertise, and how can you share that most fully?
