The VAT Cash Accounting Scheme - Could It Help Your Cashflow?

Rather than accounting for VAT on invoices you receive or issue, if you are using the VAT Cash Accounting Scheme, you account for VAT on the basis of payments you make and receive.

The main benefit of this scheme is cashflow - you don't have to pay VAT on invoices you have issued until your customers pay you. Although, there is two sides to the coin, and you can't reclaim VAT on purchases from your suppliers until you pay them.

You automatically receive bad debt relief, because if no payment is received, then no VAT is due!

10 Marketing Strategies You Should Be Implementing In Your Business

A lot of businesses have been cutting back their Marketing recently, and that's crazy! Considering we've just come out of one of the worst economic downturns ever recorded, we should be Marketing like mad, and trying to get as many new customers/clients as we can!

Which is why I've written this post; to highlight 10 Marketing strategies that you should be implementing, if you are serious about growth.

  1. Email Marketing - Emails are one of the most cost-effective ways of marketing to your database. You pay a simple monthly fee, and you can send as many emails as you wish to your customers. The best way to use Email Marketing is to try and add value to the reader; don't try selling too much. A good rule of thumb is to use the ratio 8:1 - 8 parts adding value, and 1 part selling. If you don't, someone else will.

  2. Telephone - Cold Calling - Cold calling will always bring in new customers; and that's a fact. The fact is, though, that many people find it very difficult to actually get on the phones. This is a matter of confidence; try watching some videos on Youtube, or visit this website, and then have a go on the phone - you'll be surprised how much difference it actually makes! Remember; cold calling is vital to your business. If you don't, someone else will.

The Taxman's website says that you can't claim tax relief for the cost of promotional gifts unless they cost £50 or less, and carry some obvious advertising. It turns out that's only half the story; so what's the full story?

Regardless of whether it's a gesture of goodwill at Christmas, or a sales promotion, gifts have been part of business practice for a long, long time. So you would have thought that the Taxman would have a consistent approach to these by now. Well, unfortunately, he doesn't.

We spoke to a few people that ought to be 'in the know', and found that the general view was that to get tax relief, and reclaim VAT on the cost of a business gift, it had to cost £50 or less, carry 'conspicuous advertising', and not be tobacco, food or drink.
