To Be or Not To Be Limited? That is the question!

As of April 1st 2011, the rate of tax levied on Limited Companies (corporation tax) is the same as the basic rate of income tax - 20%.

National Insurance Contributions were increased, and the increases, mainly in Class 4 National Insurance, should prompt sole traders to review their business structures and look into how they can reduce the amount of tax that they pay.

Are You A Sole Trader?

A lot of businesses start out as a Sole Trader; mainly because starting a business is hard enough, without the added paperwork forming a limited company entails.

Deciding which business structure to take in a difficult decision to make, as a 'one size fits all' scenario doesn't exist in the world of business.

Both your personal, and the business's circumstances determine which structure would best suit you, and it is up to you to decide which route to go down; do you stay as a Sole Trader, paying more tax than a Limited company (in some cases), or do you turn your business into a Limited company, and whilst paying less taxes, complete more paperwork?

Client Spotlight - Nigel Botterills Entrepreneur Circle - Business Growth Advisor - West Sussex

Hi, we're Nigel Botterills Entrepreneur Circle - Business Growth Advisor, and we're based in Copthorne, West Sussex.

We're a Sole Trader, and have just started this month, working with local businesses in the RH area.

I am working on behalf of Nigel Botterill, who has built 6 £million+ businesses in the last 6 years. He is the author of this year's bestselling Book " The Botty Rules". Nigel is probably best known for his business franchise "The Best Of".

His latest venture is the Entrepreneurs Circle; it has been running for over a year. Nigel shares his wealth of tips, tricks and knowledge on how to grow a super successful business with his members.

He has now expanded the benefits of the Entrepreneurs Circle to make meetings more local for members, this is the role of a Business Growth Advisor. We are here to help business owners live the life they want to live, to recognise the simple and effective tweaks they can make to their marketing and sales that will make a huge difference to the bottom line.

Our monthly meetings are based on practical, tried and tested tips - straight from Nigel. Everything we talk about, Nigel has been there, done it, and uses in his businesses. So you know it's not just theory; it all works.

The meetings will be based in and around Crawley, Horley, Horsham, East Grinstead & Haywards Heath.

How did I come across Nigel Botterill's Entrepreneur Circle?

In 2006 I decided that I wanted to have an "Easier life" (Ha ha!) and opened a Wellbeing Centre in partnership in Haverhill, Suffolk. The business was offering treatments and training courses in Health and Complementary therapies. This is where I came to know of Nigel and his team and started using the "The Best of" to build the success of the business in the local community. "The Best of" was a huge benefit to the business raising the profile in the town and winning awards for testimonials. A double celebration for us within twelve months of opening Winning Young Entrepreneurs of the Year in 2007 at the local chamber of commerce business awards.

From 2009 I moved from Suffolk to be with my partner down in Sussex. I starting again to build my therapeutic business, in between supporting local companies with marketing and accounts, I also manages to squeeze in a full time degree!

Early 2011 I began my journey as a Business Growth Advisor and Social Media Manager (starting this summer) in the Sussex area and I am now on a mission to work with local businesses to help them and share the wealth of knowledge from Nigel.

What is PAYE (Pay As You Earn)?

HMRC needs a way of accurately recording, and receiving the amount of income tax and national insurance everyone pays. The way that HMRC does this is through a system called PAYE (Pay As You Earn). Your employer calculates, and then makes, the necessary deductions from your pay, and then pays these deductions to HMRC.

The responsibility of making the correct deductions lies solely with the employer, and this includes all employees. NOTE: If your company is a limited company, then any directors qualify as an employee.

If you are paying electronically, the deductions must be paid to HMRC by the 22nd of each month. If you pay by any other means, then the deductions need to have reached HMRC by the 19th of each month.

If your average monthly payments are less than £1,500, you can request to pay the PAYE quarterly.

Furthermore, if any benefits are handed out by the employer, Class 1A NIC is paid on these benefits, and should be paid by 6th July after the end of each tax year.
