Quote Of The Week

Do you know the difference between education and experience? Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don't.

Pete Seeger

Joke of the Week

A lost balloonist lands in a random field and asks a man out walking his dog "Where am I?"

The man replies "you are three feet in front of me in the middle of a field"

"You must be an accountant!" retorts the balloonist

"How did you know that?" the man asks incredulously

"Easy. What you just told me is 100% accurate but absolutely useless!"

And now for your Newsletter!

A teacher has a total of 49 chalks. When a chalk reduces to 1/7 of its original size, it gets too small for her to hold for writing and hence she keeps it aside.

But the teacher hates wasting things and so, when she realises that she has enough of these small pieces to join and make another chalk of the same size, she joins them and uses the new chalkstick.

If she uses one chalk each day, how many days would the 49 chalks last?

Have I Paid Too Much Or Too Little Tax?

You may get a form from HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs) telling you that you've paid either too much, or too little tax for the tax years 2008-09 and 2009-10. The calculation shows your total income and the allowances that are due to you for each of these years.

If you don't get one, don't worry - not everyone will, just those who have under or overpaid their tax.

If you do get a Tax Calculation, you should check the calculation carefully to ensure you agree with all the information given. You should also make sure you read the notes that come with it as these will help you understand what it means. You can read the notes online by going to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/P800/

Phishers jump on PAYE bandwagon

The media firestorm surrounding the PAYE under- and overpayment letters that went out to 45,000 taxpayers this week has provided an ideal opportunity for scammers, according to Sophos security experts.

In his blog, Sophos security consultant Graham Cluley published an example spam message now circulating, which arrives with the subject line, "You Have An HMRC Refund".

The email explains: "Following an upgrade of our computer systems and review of our records we have investigated your payments and latest tax returns over the past years, our calculations show you have made over payments of 317.66GBP."

Corporate Dishonesty: How to deal with ethical dilemmas

The higher you go up the business ladder, the more likely you are to encounter corporate dishonesty and the murky waters can soon engulf the unwary, warns criminal defence lawyer Martin Cunningham.

It's an everyday dilemma that all honest business people hope will never happen to them - someone with a position of power in an organisation that your company does business with takes you for a quiet drink and asks for a 'backhander'. Perhaps the request comes from someone who exercises control over a big contract. The future jobs of half your workforce could rest on the successful outcome. It becomes clear that the customer is not playing games. He wants tens, even hundreds of thousands of pounds and suggests when, where and how he'd like paying. What do you do?

Global Bankers Agree New Capital Reserve Rules

Central bank governors and senior regulators have agreed new rules designed to prevent a repeat of the recent financial crisis.
At a meeting in the Swiss city of Basle, they agreed a deal requiring banks to hold more capital in reserve.

BBC business editor Robert Peston says the deal is an important milestone in banking reform.

He says it should mean banks having a greater ability to absorb losses in future crises without taxpayer help.
