You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of.

You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.

Camp Pineveiw's cook, Margaret Johnson, was just about to begin preparing the picnic lunch for all the campers. She already knew she needed to fill 55 bowls of the same size and capacity with the same amount of food. When she was done, she decided to read the guidelines for the picnic, just out of curiosity. The guidelines said:

1. Every camper gets their own bowl of soup.
2. Every two campers will get one bowl of spaghetti to share.
3. Every three campers will get one bowl of salad to share.
4. All campers are required to have their own helping of salad, spaghetti, and soup.

After some rapid calculations, Margaret was able to figure out how many campers were going to the picnic. Can you?

Self Assessment

Self Assessment started in 1997, with the idea that taxpayers can easily complete their own tax returns. The reality has turned out not to be quite so easy.

The tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April the next year, and under self-assessment it is up to the individual taxpayer to calculate their own tax liability and pay the tax due by the due date.

Who has to fill in a Self-Assessment Return?

The majority of people in the UK are taxed under PAYE and do not have to complete a Self Assessment tax return. However, where you have an income that is not taxed at source or may be liable to higher rate tax on an income that has only had basic rate tax stopped, you will probably need to complete a self-assessment return. It is your responsibility to notify chargeability to tax to HMRC.

The following people usually have to complete one...

  • Anyone who is self-employed;
  • A company director;
  • A trustee;
  • Pensioners with an annual income of £100,000 or more;
  • Employees or pensioners with an annual income from savings or investments of £10,000 or more;
  • An employee or pensioner with untaxed annual income of £2,500 or more;

Client Spotlight - Central Sussex College

Hi, my name is Clare Skinner. I work as a Skills Adviser in Empl
oyer Services at Central Sussex College, Crawley. My role is to identify your individual business needs and develop a full business support package, helping you access government funding to support the costs involved with training your staff.

Central Sussex College offers a full range of professional qualifications and apprenticeships which can be delivered in the workplace, along with a wide range of one and two day courses delivered at our centrally located campuses.

As the largest college provider of apprenticeship training in the South East we currently work with many high profile companies such as Ford, Thales and GlaxoSmithKline as well as many independent companies including Keeper's Accountancy, who have experienced first-hand the benefits of accessing our employer services. With the support of the College's Job Shop, Keeper's Accountancy was put in touch with Ben, a college student who was looking to complete an Apprenticeship in Business Administration.

Chris Halward from Keeper's Accountancy says: "I met Clare at a networking event; I explained that we were looking to recruit someone, and that we wanted someone that would grow with the company. Well, that was it; I was introduced to some handpicked school leavers, and students, and the college held our hand all the way.

"It is a great feeling being able offer someone a real shot at building a career through an apprentice scheme, especially at a time when the economy is in disarray and there is little hope for young minds trying to get their first taste of employment. The whole experience has been easy and inexpensive and we are currently looking for someone else to fulfil another role. Thank you for making the recruitment process so easy.''

Whether you are looking to add to your workforce or want to develop your current staff, there are many government initiatives to support with the costs of staff training.

As an example, between now and October 2010 the government is offering a £1,500 training grant for employers taking on an apprentice aged between 16 and 18 (subject to meeting the eligibility criteria).

A training grant for Managers and Directors is also available for strategic training, with a grant of £500 and an extra £500 match-funded. Other initiatives are available to support the cost of your staff development.

Roxanna & The London to Brighton Bike Ride

As you know (from us pestering you!), Roxanna took part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride yesterday.

Over 27,000 people aged 14 to 75 set off from Clapham Common at 6am on the 54 mile (87km) trek through Surrey, West Sussex and East Sussex; and this year's event is expected to have raised around £4m for the British Heart Foundation.

The event was a fantastic success, and Roxanna managed to raise £110 for the British Heart Foundation.

Luckily (for Roxanna!), the weather held up, and was perfect for the bike ride.

We would like to thank you for your contribution towards making this event successful.
Thanks for reading. You can find us on our website, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn; just click the relevant link at the top of the Newsletter.
