| Ontario's Accessibility Standard for Customer Service | | |
One in seven people in Ontario have a disability. Over the next 20 years, this number will rise as the population ages.
Creating a province where every person who lives or visits can participate fully makes good sense - for our people, our businesses and our communities.
The Accessibility Standard for Customer Service applies to all organizations in Ontario with one or more employees and, for the private sector, comes into effect on January 1, 2012.
To comply to this standard there are four tasks that must be completed:
- create your plan
- train your staff
- put it on paper
- let us know how you're doing
The following is a short checklist to help ensure all of the requirements above are met:
Step 1
Create and implement an accessibility plan that:
- Considers a person's disability when communicating with them
- Allows assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers and oxygen tanks
- Allows service animals
- Welcomes support persons
- Lets customers know when accessible services aren't available
- Invites customers to provide feedback
Step 2
Train your staff on accessible customer service.
Step 3
Put your plan in writing by:
- Letting customers know how to find your plan (e.g., on your website)
- Offering your plan in accessible formats, like large print, if requested
Step 4
Report your progress online.
To help get you started, the Ministry of Community and Social Services has introduced the
This program is ideal for businesses and organizations that want to be leaders in:
- improving accessibility for people with disabilities
- and, helping organizations meet the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

Under the annual EnAbling Change Partnership Program, the government provides project funding to organizations that have the vision, leadership and commitment to improve accessibility across industries or sectors. The Accessibility Directorate of Ontario, part of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, administers the program.
For more information on what you need to do to comply with the Customer Service Standard, please contact accessibility@ontario.ca or visit the Ministry of Community and Social Services website at: http://www.mcss.gov.on.ca/en/mcss/. |

They value its traditional role and recognize its need to look forward and change.
Library Champions are spreading the word and local businesses can help by:
- having a Library Champion poster created featuring them holding a library card: this poster can be displayed at their place of business and will also be featured on the library's Facebook page
- displaying a window decal of the library card at their place of business
- purchasing a car magnet which looks like the new library card
- spreading the word one person at a time
