Peel Halton Workforce Survey
Peel Halton Workforce Development GroupIf you are an employer, the Peel Halton Workforce Development Group (PHWDG) would like your feedback.

The PHWDG have launched an employer survey with the purpose of identifying hiring trends and workforce training expectations, as well as focusing on some specific issues including skills shortages and the labour market challenges of newcomers to Canada.

All responses are completely confidential and the cumulative results of this survey will be assembled, analyzed and then shared with all partners and made public in a report.

These results will help guide the development of training programs and employment services activities. It will also provide a benchmark that employers can use to compare their respective company's issues.

A New Home for the Brampton SBEC

Brampton SBEC LogoDue to the sheer geographic sizes of both the Town of Caledon and the City of Brampton, there is a constant cooperation between the Economic Development Departments of each municipality to ensure adequate coverage of services that support entrepreneurs and small business managers.

It is sometimes more convenient for Brampton-based residents and business owners to seek assistance from the Caledon SBEC and the same applies to some Caledon-based residents and entrepreneurs - depending on where they are located in Caledon.

Therefore we are pleased to announce that on October 17, 2011 the Brampton SBEC is relocating from 33 Queen St. West, Brampton to Brampton City Hall, 2nd floor.

As of October 17, 2011 the new address will be:

Brampton Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC)
2 Wellington Street West, 2nd Floor East
Brampton, ON, L6Y 4R2

For more details on the services offered by the Brampton SBEC, visit their WEBSITE.

Caledon's Aviation Business Park Takes Flight
Brampton Flight CentreCaledon's centrally located regional airport, the Brampton Airport is owned by the Brampton Flying Club.

First registered in 1946 as a not-for-profit training organization, the Brampton Flying Club moved to its present location in the rolling hills of Caledon in 1970 and is currently the 16th busiest airport in Canada.

Known primarily for flight training - both professional and recreational, over the years the Brampton Flight Centre's (BFC) fleet of aircraft has grown to 24, two sophisticated flight simulators and state of the art lecture theatres. In fact, many of the world's largest airlines BeechCraft 1900employ pilots who have trained at BFC.

Today, in addition to offering convenient air taxi service to major Ontario destinations and numerous North American airports, companies can also take advantage of executive and priority express delivery services for small packages.

The recent 410 extension into Caledon connects the Brampton Airport to the 407, 400 and 401 highways, making it easily accessible from all across the GTA.

All of this growth and expansion of services has prompted the BFC to create an Aviation Business Park and position itself as a destination for aviation related businesses.

Situated on 5.25 acres, the North Campus can accommodate up to 80,000 square feet of light industrial space providing businesses with McLaughlin Road access and airside links to taxiways and runways to better conduct their business.

Necessity was the Mother of Invention
Developing the Aviation Business Park didn't come without its challenges. With no ability to hook-up to the municipal water supply in the mid-term the Brampton Flying Club has had to be creative. But, this did not prevent it from being "green".

Triton Underground Water Storage SystemFor example, rain water is harvested from the roof to provide grey water for aircraft cleaning, the washrooms and holding tanks for fire protection.

The Triton underground water storage system, (shown being installed to the right), is expandable to allow the correct amount of water to be stored to match the area of the building and meet local and federal fire codes.  Placing the tanks below the frost line and covered by the hangar driveway to the taxiway produces a compact and practical solution.

Permeable paving will be used for customer parking in front of the building rather than asphalt.  The benefit here is in managing storm water run-off. Permeable paving allows heavy rain water and the spring thaw to soak through the paving and slowly dissipate into the drainage system BFC Permeable Pavingbelow.  In turn, the system slowly feeds into the drainage system for the entire business park which is designed to lead water away from the buildings and taxiways via low impact design elements such as bioswales.

By implementing some innovative water management solutions they have solved their own water issues but are also setting a great example for others in the business community.

Currently employing four people, Fisher Flying Products produces 14 different wooden aircraft designs as precut kits for home assembly. Its new location allows Fisher Flying Products a larger and more optimized production facility and room for training seminars.
