Caledon: A Partner in the Ontario Food Cluster
The Town of Caledon is a partner in a new initiative which will attract foreign investment and create more businesses in Ontario's agri-food sector.

Ontario Food ClusterThe Ontario Food Cluster (OFC) is made up of partners from throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the Guelph area and Waterloo Region. Approximately 2,500 food and beverage companies are currently located in these regions. The OFC's mandate is to develop interest within the food and beverage industry and to assist in the growth of Ontario's agri-food business cluster. Members of the OFC will work collaboratively to attract foreign investment, and international trade opportunities.

In 2008, the Town of Caledon's Economic Development Department completed the Town of Caledon Competitive Analysis. Through comprehensive research, analysis and stakeholder consultation the results of the study identified that Caledon's investment attraction program should focus on Manufacturing and Professional, Scientific & Technical Services. Food Processing is a relative area of strength within these identified categories that Caledon can leverage to its advantage.

The agriculture and agri-food sector is its number one employer in Ontario. Throughout the GTA and Southwestern Ontario, 210,000 researchers, industry employees, innovators and collaborators have built a stellar reputation for reliable, sustainable sources of agricultural raw materials, state of-the-art automated food processing methods, and world class food safety standards.

Approximately 110,000 of these people work directly in agri-food processing/manufacturing, with another 100,000 work in related sectors such as distribution, retail and food service. Ontario has earned a global reputation for food quality and holds 31.8% of Canada's supermarket and IFT Logo convenience and specialty food store market - more than any other Canadian province.

Caledon's partnership with OFC provides excellent opportunities to participate in, and gain exposure at, international investment events that target the agri-food sector.

In June of this year Economic Development staff participated in the Annual Meeting and Food Expo of the Institute of Food Technologists. During this event, Caledon's Economic Development Staff participated in meetings with 18 companies from around the globe that have an interest in investing within Ontario.

The Ontario Food Cluster has been made possible by many partners, which include: the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA), Canada's Technology Triangle, Grow Guelph, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), and Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

UPDATE: Bolton Community Improvement Plan (CIP)

Bolton Street Shot

On April 5, 2011 Caledon Council adopted a report which will see the approval authority for CIP Financial Incentive Grant Programs be delegated to the Treasurer. The Treasurer will only approve applications that have received unanimous recommendation from the CIP Review Panel.

This will reduce the processing time of completed Grant Applications to approximately two weeks.

The Financial Incentive Grant Programs provide an opportunity for the Town of Caledon to promote redevelopment, revitalization and beautification in the community.

Therefore, there is a great potential benefit for Bolton's industrial and commercial property and business owners who apply for the CIP Grant Programs to assist with the cost of their improvement projects.

For more information regarding the Bolton CIP, CLICK HERE, or contact Sandra Dolson, Economic Development Officer at [email protected] or by calling 905.584.2272 x4152.
