Mayors' Business Breakfast - May 4, 2011

Caledon Country Club LogoOn Wednesday, May 4, 2011 the second Town of Caledon Mayor's Business Breakfast for 2011 will take place at the beautiful Caledon Country Club at 2121 Olde Baseline Road in Inglewood.

Caledon Country Club Scenic Golf GreenThis "must attend" networking event will take place from 7:00am until 9:00am and is sponsored by Hydro OneEnbridge, Smart Commute Brampton Caledon, and WaterSmart Peel - who will all be in attendance to share information on their latest programs.

 

It will include a sumptuous buffet breakfast followed by a "Greening Your Business" keynote address by Dr. Bob Willard - a renowned environmental guru, author and founder of The Sustainability Advantage.

 

Dr. Willard holds a PhD in sustainability from the University of Toronto and is a leading expert on quantifying and selling the business value of corporate sustainability strategies. He has given hundreds of keynote presentations to corporate, government, university, and NGO audiences.

 

Bob WillardHe has created a series of books, DVDs, spreadsheets, webinars, and an extensive Master Slide Set - all of which provide capacity-building resources for champions of sustainability.

 

Mr Willard also worked 34 years with IBM Canada; serves on the advisory boards of The Natural Step Canada, Learning for a Sustainable Future, and Durham Sustain Ability; and is a member of the Durham Region Round Table on Climate Change and the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP).

Caledon Business Survey

Survey SampleTo achieve a better understanding of the state of the local economy, and the issues facing Caledon-based businesses, the Town of Caledon's Economic Development Department developed a brief survey to solicit feedback from local business owners and managers.
  
The Caledon Business Survey form was posted on the Town of Caledon's website, listed in this newsletter, and distributed throughout the municipality between November 2010 and January 2011.
  
A total of 100 surveys were returned from a diverse sample of Caledon's business community, representing over 15 industry categories and 13 Caledon communities.
  
The intent for this grassroots information is to serve as input into future Economic Development strategy, programs and services for Caledon.

Caledon Hotel Market Study

Hotel RoomThe Town of Caledon recently contracted an independent consulting firm to complete a comprehensive study on the feasibility of constructing and operating a hotel facility in Caledon.
  
This study confirms a significant opportunity to establish a branded, focused-service hotel to meet current (and growing) business and leisure overnight accommodation needs.

The complete 62 page study, which includes an extensive analysis of the accommodations market for Caledon and surrounding areas and an assessment of five (5) potential hotel sites, can be purchased at a cost of $100 + HST.

Updated Notice of Municipal Development Charge Increase

Construction SiteThe Non-Residential Development Charge Discount is coming to an end.
 
Council for the Corporation of the Town of Caledon considered and agreed upon the elimination of the industrial development charge discount at their meeting of March 8, 2011.
 
As per Section 15 - Phasing In of the Town of Caledon's Development Charge By-law 2009-090, please be advised that as of July 8, 2011 the Town's portion of ALL non-residential development will be charged the full rate which currently sits at $46.13 per square metre ($4.29 per square foot) of total floor area.

Caledon Economic Development Advisory Committee (CEDAC) Announced

Caledon Economic Development DepartmentThe Caledon Economic Development Advisory Committee (CEDAC) is a Committee of Council that provides the Town of Caledon with guidance and feedback has named its members for 2011.

 

The 2011 CEDAC members (and the industry sectors or organizations they represent) are as follows:
  • Frank Guzzo (Manufacturing Sector)
  • Steven Desrocher (Service Sector)
  • Moreen Miller (Aggregate Industry)
  • Kelly Darnley (Caledon Chamber of Commerce)
  • John Giancola (Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association)
  • Phillip Armstrong and David Lyons (Peel Federation of Agriculture)
  • Maria Britto and Cathy Perennec-McLean (Members at Large)
  • Councillors Doug Beffort (Ward 1), Allan Thompson (Ward 2) and Richard Whitehead (Wards 3 & 4) and Patti Foley (Ward 5)
A representative from the Bolton Business Improvement Association (BIA) will also be appointed when its executive is finalized.

CEDAC meets on a quarterly basis and the meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in the Committee Room at Town Hall. Time to be determined

This new start-up business opens to the public for the first time on March 15, 2011. It will employ approximately eight people (one full-time and seven part-time) at its location at the corner of Hurontario Street (Hwy 10) and Charleston Sideroad in the heart of Caledon Village.

Bolton Community Improvement Plan (CIP)

Thinking of renovating the façade of your building or improving the landscaping at your property? Perhaps you are contemplating a complete redevelopment of your site?

 

If you are an industrial or commercial landowner in the community of Bolton you may be eligible for financial incentive grants from the Town of Caledon.

 

In April 2009, after months of research and public consultation, Town of Caledon Council adopted the Bolton Community Improvement Plan (CIP), and companion Urban Design Guidelines, for the Bolton Community Improvement Project Area.

 

There are eight (8) financial incentive grant programs in the Bolton CIP, including:

  • tax increment equivalent grants 
  • development charge grants 
  • application and permit fee grants 
  • building and façade improvement grants 
  • energy retrofit grants
  • landscape improvement grants
  • mixed use construction/conversion grants
  • environmental study grants
