Is Your Resume at the Ready?

Whether or not you're in the market for a new job, keeping your resume up-to-date is an important and savvy move for any leader.  Because you never know when the next job opening or internal promotion will present itself, you should regularly update your resume with new job duties, relevant accomplishments, recently achieved certifications, and other achievements instead of trying to remember critical information days, months, or even years after the fact.

Here are 2 tips to help you keep your resume up-to-date painlessly:

  • Keep an Achievement File.  Keep track of new licenses, degrees, awards and certificates you earn.  Don't forget to note new skills acquired, too--such as learning a new software or a new language.
  • Focus on Accomplishments, Not Job Details.  Your potential employer will already have an understanding of your job details based on your title.  What they won't see is what you have accomplished.  Accomplishments need not be monumental; they must simply demonstrate your prowess and skill.  Use dollar amounts, numbers, quotas, percentages, etc. to help quantify your accomplishments when possible.
