Emotional Intelligence Competencies

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize and manage one's own emotions and those of others. The skillful use of EI can be a powerful strategy for enhancing results as a leader. The intelligent use of emotions begins with an understanding of EI competencies. Evaluate yourself using these 4 competencies to determine how well you are currently using EI to lead in your workplace:

  • Self-Awareness: The ability to verbalize one's feelings in response to an action.
  • Motivation: The ability to set goals and stay with an assignment until it is completed despite setbacks and interruptions.
  • Empathy: The ability to recognize emotions in others and acknowledge those emotions in a productive way.
  • Interpersonal Relations: The ability to use social skills and effective communication to relate to others and help diverse people work well together.
