From the Rev. Joey Lee, Executive Presbyter
|
Greetings!
Transportation security, legislative gridlock, persistent unemployment, escalating military campaigns, 2010 is starting off as a tough year, a challenge for all of us as individuals, families, citizens, and members of the body of Christ.
Our churches have not been immune to the financial challenges that have confronted millions of Americans. And if your congregation has experienced any decline in membership or attendance, then it has become all too apparent that maintaining program and staff is becoming increasingly difficult, and adds to the mix of anxiety, apprehension and fear that seems to grip us all.
And that is why this should be the church's finest hour.
At a time when some shout to be fearful, the church claims faith. At a time when some would seek scapegoats and blame, the church claims compassion and justice. At a time when the future seems bleak, the church trusts that the God who held us in the past will hold us in the future. At a time when scarcity threatens, the church recognizes and shares our abundance.
The Church has always sought to be light and salt in a world of darkness and bitterness. As we begin this new year, with swirling demands and stresses, well aware of the challenges that lie ahead, let us not forget who we are, and whose we are. We have a message to the world: faith, hope and love.
This should be our finest hour.
- Joey (with acknowledgment to Sir Winston Churchill)
"Jesus said to them, 'Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" - Mark 4:40
" Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:11-13

Charlotte Powers, new Presbytery Moderator
|
Connecting to God and Each Other.
I'm so honored and humbled to be elected your Moderator at the November Presbytery meeting and so embarrassed that I was unable to be there. I do apologize. Serving as Moderator is such an honor, but also has a deeper meaning for me as well. My father served as the first lay Moderator of the Santa Barbara Presbytery in 1953. To follow in his footsteps is indeed a privilege.
I'm an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown San Jose, an urban church. I have been attending this church since 1963 when my late husband and I moved with our four children to San Jose. In 2008 I was also a Deacon, have taught Sunday School, and served as the Youth Leader of our High School Youth Group. Most recently I served as the Executive Coordinator of the Committee on Local Arrangements for the 2008 General Assembly held in San Jose. There were so many volunteers that gave of their time from all over the San Francisco and San Jose Presbyteries, but I found that most of us did not feel connected with each other at all.
I reflected on this for quite some time after GA and came to the conclusion that we, as churches and congregations and even pastors, are not connected. We aren't aware of each other's celebrations or our needs, or our connections to each other as the Body of Christ in the Presbytery. I was reminded of my days as a school teacher, working side by side with other educators, with the same goals and objectives, but really all alone in our individual classrooms, like individual silos. We never seemed to have time to share ideas, etc with our colleagues.

| PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN |
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN ON THE MOVE! SPRING GATHERING: "Beyond Boundaries... Breaking Barriers: Women and Religion in America" March 13, 12 noon - 3 p.m. Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church Following lunch, we are pleased to have the Rev. Dr. James B. Bennett, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University and Parish Associate at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, as our speaker. Jim says this about his presentation: "American Christianity, like most religions around the world, is shaped by a fundamental paradox: a majority female membership is led by a predominantly male clergy. Too often, history has focused on the male clergy and ignored the ways that women--both as participants and as leaders--are central to the story of American Christianity. But when viewed through the lens of women's experience, religion in America takes on a very different shape. In the end, it turns out that Women's history is American Religious History!" Come to learn more about this topic and bring along your friends, neighbors, pastors...male and female! Because we will be having lunch, please let us know that you are coming by Monday, March 8, 2010. RSVP to Claudia Hamm at 408-356-6665 or e-mail her at jnchamm@gmail.com.

| Refugee Ministry Advocates |
|
From Elsa Amboy and Melissa Kreisa, Presbytery Refugee Advocates:
Special thanks to Los Gatos Presbyterian Church for the opportunity to share our journey with refugees, for your generous donation towards bus passes, and for your ongoing support of our African friends. Thank you to Nancy Harrington and Evergreen Presbyterian for allowing us to take up so much of your service! Your donation and support is so greatly appreciated. Stone Church -- you are wonderful! Thank you for the opportunity to share at your PW luncheon, your bus pass donation and for contributing your time and talents to help reunite the family from Kenya and nurture the family from Afghanistan. Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church hosted a Christmas giving tree for refugee youth. Thank you so very much for your time and effort with this and with the way you are wrapping your arms around the two families from Africa! In December, the Sunnyvale JustFaith classes participated in an evening event called a "border crossing." They hosted a meal for newly arrived refugees at the Sunnyvale Refugee Transition House. In all of these ways, our churches and members were enriched as they enriched these new residents as they adjusted to life in America.
