Virus in a browser window?

Browser Virus

I've had several support calls over this last month about a virus that suddenly appears on a web page.  You open a web page and there you are with a message telling you that there are viruses in your computer or that your hard drive is failing! This can happen on a Mac/Apple too.  See this example link below. Well, don't panic; close the browser window, in fact restart your computer and this type of virus will vanish. I encourage clients to shut down their computer and do a restart immediately when detecting the possibility of any virus as a number of viruses will disappear on a restart.  If you can't force a restart, you can apply constant  pressure to the power button and in a small period of time the computer will shut down. Windows XP, Vista and 7 are all stable enough to come back from a forced shut down.  CLICK LINK FOR MORE INFO:

And on that note:

DriveByVirus"Drive by Virus" downloads are becoming common and I see a number of clients each month to remove this quick and dirty installed virus. You "Google" some key word and click on the first link you see. Before you know it you land on website that is less than you expected, in fact nothing there matches the parameters of your search. Worse yet, you've been infected! Why? This site is in Google search engine! The truth is that virus makers are hijacking and actually buying legitimate links just to infect you.  One solution is to use AVG Free, with its' built in link scanner that marks valid sites with a green check mark. Another is to install MYWOT  a free plugin for all the current browsers that will pre-check website for you. Try it!

DogSmileWant to paper a wall with your favorite cat or dog  photo? Or do you need a 10 foot poster of that offspring for a graduation party or Bar Mitzvah? Generate big rasterized posters out of your photos. No installation is needed. Point the Rasterbator (Pardon my French) to the image and automatically split it onto several pages. You select the size of the paper you wish to use and also choose to print in portrait or landscape mode. Click the Rasterbate! button and Rasterbator saves your image in PDF format. Print the PDF and piece the segments together.

Large E-Mail Attachments

LargeEmailNeed to send a large file over an internet connection? If you have Optimum, Comcast or Verizon (FIOS or DSL,) the maximum size of any message is 20 MB. If you need to send an attachment larger than that, then the best way is to use one of the FREE transfer services.

My favorite is YouSendIt which has a free plan for up to 100MB at a time and is easy to use.  Need to send a larger file? WeTransfer  (by far the easiest transfer program) lets you send up to 2GIG at a time also for free. Another option is for you to start a Dropbox account (see March Newsletter) or better yet a Sugarsync account and share the 2GIG or 5 GIG free storage (respectively), with the others that need access. These latter two are great for families that want to share pictures and other file types on a regular basis.

Ask Mr. Computer

AIO PrinterLG asks: We were hoping to purchase a new printer. I think we would like a user friendly color printer that also has a scanner and a copier (that is all probably standard these days, I imagine).  We would like to have it work with our two wired computers and our 3 laptops also. Our printers get used a lot as we have three kids and J and I do a large amount of work printing at home as well. Finally, if there is somewhere you would recommend we purchase this printer, we would love to hear about that too!

I get this query a lot so I'm re-printing my response below. I'm sure enough of my readers will find it useful somewhere along the line.

The ideal location for a printer for everybody to use is on the network. To get a printer on the network, you need to either have one with a built in Network adapter AND it needs to be placed near the router, or near a wired computer (where a switch will let it share that network connection), or at a pre-wired RJ45 connector (wall plate) that routes back to the router OR one with a wireless adapter built into the printer and within connective range of the (existing or purchased) wireless router.

In the instance of a wireless printer, it functions in the same manner as any wireless device, connecting back to the router wirelessly and then being available to everybody on your network. In either case, wired or wireless, the cost added to the printer for this connection is minimal these days.

My preference is wired printing, if only because when you're having trouble printing and the printer is wireless, there are more items to check and diagnose.

Having said that, If you do decide to go for a wireless printer get one with a graphical display on the printer panel  which you can use to check and modify network connectivity directly from the printer panel. Otherwise, you might have to connect the printer to a computer via a USB cable to check connection issues.

Staples, on any given Sunday, puts a multitude of these printers on sale, from HP, Canon and Brother. All printers follow a " Razor and Blade" sales campaign wherein they give you the printer for a song and get you on endless years of ink cartridge purchases. Buy only printers with separate cartridges for the three primary colors and black.   The more you pay, the faster the printer will print.

The HP 6500 comes in wired and wireless models and represents a middle of the road machine with separate cartridges for each color. It will be available on and off on sale if not every week, then every other. Search Amazon and HP for online discounts and of course Staples to pick it up yourself.  Click on the sample link below.

BTW, Staples has a "price matching" policy and will match local vendors as well as their own and other reputable websites.
