Welcome New Subscribers!
Coming Soon! Available on-line Archive copies of the newsletter. In the interim, please email me if you want copies of any or all of the previous issues.
Mr. Computer not only fixes computers, sets up networks, connects you to the
internet and removes viruses, but we also connect and integrate audio/video
equipment like that new Flat Screen TV. We do training.
FIX IT NOW? We can fix your computer REMOTELY! Need an appointment in the evening? Early morning? With the use of remote control software we can access your computer from offsite and fix 95% of what ails it, often in the same day. Remote calls can be less expensive too. If we can't fix it, there's no charge for the remote session so long as we schedule an appointment to come out and make the repair. Remote software is temporary and removes itself when the session is over.

Free & Portable
Email: I have not one email address but
several. I receive corporate related emails through my MisterComputer.com
address and I also have free email with yahoo, hotmail and Gmail.
Why?
Well in addition to allowing me to use those secondary email addresses to stop
the onslaught of spam from the various companies I order stuff from or submit
inquires to, these accounts are portable. My current ISP (Internet Service
Provider) and personal email host is Cablevision through their Optimum-On-Line
service. Should I choose to switch to Verizon for whatever reason or perhaps to
retire to Florida, where Comcast is king, I don't have to notify any of my
friends of a new email address because that yahoo account is portable and mine
forever.
You can even use an Email Client (Outlook, Outlook Express,
etc) with these accounts. This is easiest done with Gmail but all of the
services work with Outlook and Outlook Express. See links to the right for more
info.

Free Wi-fi. There are
a number of establishments in the metropolitan area (like Starbucks) that offer
free wi-fi. Don't be surprised if your local diner, café or bakery does now, or
will soon, offer free wi-fi . Lots of Hotels and Motels offer free Wi-fi and there's nothing like it when looking for a
restaurant in a strange town, There's also
lots of good reasons for wanting to pick up the internet, in the street,
wherever you are. Need directions on the fly? How about movie schedules for
your local theatre? Mmm. Which theatre is running that Abbot and Costello
special and when?
If you're one of those Blackberry users, or a similar
product, then your already paying for internet everywhere, at somewhere in the
neighborhood of $40 to $50 a month, email included and taxes extra. If you're
not, and you have a laptop, an ever popular Netbook or even an IPod Touch (yes
they have built in wi-fi capability) there are three distinct ways to connect
up to a wireless network.
There are all of those people in the world who have wireless
routers that are un-secure. Ask the software that controls your wireless card
to point out all of the available networks and show you which are unsecure. You
will certainly find many.
Optimum provides wireless repeaters across a broad
brushstroke of Westchester County, affording Cablevision internet subscriber's
free service. Again, ask your wireless
card to point out available wireless networks and look for the "Optimum WIFI connection).
You just put in your email address and password and you're up and running. It's
not light speed but certainly fast enough to check on that movie. Check the setup instructions and location
list by clicking on the link to the left.
Finally, here's a website that provides a list of available
free wi-fi connections across the US. You would need to browse it in advance of
your trip but it's a valuable tool, accurate and updated regularly. Again link
to the left.

Don't Pay Retail! Several web sites have
sprung up, in recent years, whose sole purpose purports to be to provide
coupons for anything and everything you might buy. You will run into inadvertently running into
spyware at some of these sights and you will find that not all of them are legitimate. In fact the coupons they provide are often counterfeit.
In addition to the old saying that
"if it's too good to be true, it generally is...", there are two things to avoid. One, if there's a fee for the coupon
it's a scam and if you need to download some software to print the coupon, in
all likelihood you'll be downloading additional software at the same time, without your
knowledge and that you really don't want on your computer.
I've provided two coupon
sites that are known for the validity of their offerings on the left.

Ask MisterComputer:
CB asks: The "show Desktop" icon has vanished from my Quick
Launch Toolbar, how can I get it back. I am running Windows XP.
MisterComputer Answers:
The Show Desktop Icon, normally found on the Quick Launch
Toolbar, is very useful as it allows you to minimize all open applications and
return to your desktop. The application can be restored by either clicking on their
representative Icon on the taskbar or by using a combination of the ALT plus
TAB KEYS to page through all the open applications.
To restore the icon in Windows XP, Press the "Start" button
and then select Run. In the dialogue box that opens type "regsvr32/n/i:u
shell32.dll". You will then need to restart your computer for the icon to
reappear.
If you have no run choice when pressing start, then do the following:
Right click on the Start button and select properties. Press the Customize
button on the start menu tab and follow that by pressing the advanced tab on
the following page. Then scroll down the list of check boxes and dots until you
see a box for the "Run Command" to be displayed. Put a check mark in the box
and apply this new setting. The Run Command will now be available
To restore the icon in Windows Vista, follow the link to the
left, download, unzip (double click) and drag the only encapsulated module to
the Quick Launch Bar. Your Show Desktop Icon will have been restored. Further directions
are on the linked page.
