Windows 7 is on its way!
October 22 is the slated release date for Windows 7,
Microsoft's hope of extracting itself from the Vista mess. Windows 7, based
upon trade publications, should provide all the features that Microsoft, pre
Vista's release, promised Vista would be. It is purported to be faster and
that's all that matters to me. I've provided two links to the left. One, to
tour Windows 7; You don't have to install Silverlight to watch the demo, just
click on any of the tour links at the bottom of the page. The second will allow
you to download and run software to check your current PC and see if it will run
this new operating system without modifying existing equipment. (if anyone is
counting, it's Windows 95, Windows 98, Millennium, 2000, XP, Vista and Now #7).

GOT DOCX?
Microsoft word 2007 creates, by default, a word document
with an extension of DOCX. All previous iterations of MS Word offspring have
always ended in DOC. And you can't open a DOCX with any of these previous
versions without the installation of a free converter. You download and install
first, the free converter and subsequently the free converter service pack to fix problems with the Converter (do
you believe that?). After installation, Word, Excel and Power Point 2007(DOCX, XLSX, PPTX)
documents open transparently with any previous Office release. See
links to the left for both downloads.

On That Note....
If you don't have a copy of PowerPoint on your computer and you're getting PowerPoint presentation files from friends and family, created with any
release of MS PowerPoint (extension .PPS or .PPSX), you
can still view the presentation. Download Microsoft's free PowerPoint viewer,
install it and you're good to go. Tip: if the presentation file has an
extension of .PPT, change it to .PPS (rename it) and you can use the
viewer. See link to left.

And Finally,
As my brother-in-law oft says, If it's for free, it's for
me... OpenOffice is a suite of tools that
provide nearly the same functionality as their Microsoft Office Counterparts
and all the tools are F-R-E-E, free! Free Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics,
databases tools are all included. You can even open Microsoft Office documents and spreadsheets with OpenOffice (2007 requires a bit of effort). Read
about it or try it; Links to the left. |

Ask MisterComputer:
GK asks, "I use AOL
to get to the internet. I frequently get a pop-up that says I have experienced a run time error and asks further, if I want to
de-bug. 'They are hard to make go away', what can I do? , Should I debug?"
MisterComputer Answers:
Believe it or not, AOL's browser (web pages) might not look like
Internet Explorer, but, under the hood, it is. AOL (and others) do capitalize on the Microsoft
Browser, modifying its appearance to suit their needs. To stop the debug
message (fixing it is AOL's responsibility so don't hold your breath) actually requires
a change to a setting within Internet Explorer. Open IE, then select Tools from the Menu Bar, follow up with a left
click on Internet Options choice and finally push the Advanced Tab that appears in the subsequent
window. We're almost there.... Navigate to the check box about half way down the
page labeled "Disable script debugging (Other) and put a check mark in the box
to the left. Apply the settings and close all the windows, you're done and the
messages should be gone as well.
