YDRS Logo2010 Youth Development Through Recreation Services Symposium another resounding success

ARPA's 2010 Youth Development Through Recreation Services (YDRS) Symposium was saw over 60 delegates convene at The Banff Centre March 15-17th.  A major highlight of the 2010 YDRS Symposium was Ian Hill's opening keynote presentation, which both inspired action and provided practical tools for delegates to become agents of change within their communities.

"Ian Hill made me realize through his message that I am in the right line of work.  It is like the job was made for me, not me made for the job," stated Ang Watts from the City of Calgary.  Other presentation highlights included Nick Holt's session on connecting with urban youth through a pilot after-school initiative, and Don Carruthers Den Hoed's session on engaging youth through the Alberta parks system.  Session presentations from YDRS will be available on the ARPA website shortly.

YDRS is a yearly symposium that provides an opportunity for youth practitioners to come together to learn first-hand about youth development and its application in recreation; hear from colleagues and peers through focused and themed presentations; enjoy networking opportunities; and return home with practical and applicable resources.

For more information on YDRS, please visit www.ydrs.arapaonline.ca or contact Roxanne Gingras, Children & Youth Program Coordinator, at rgingras@arpaonline.ca.

RPM Bug BoyJune is Recreation and Parks Month is just around the corner

ARPA invites all of its member to join in with us as we gear up to celebrate "June is Recreation and Parks Month" and the many ways recreation and parks enhance quality of life in Alberta.

June is an ideal time to get kids outdoors, and engage them in the natural world as it blooms and grows around them.  It is particularly timely this year as awareness about the importance of connecting children with nature continues to grow.

Once again this year, we will invite you to sign the June is Recreation and Parks Month Charter to declare yourself a "Champion for Recreation and Parks Month" for your family, workplace, and community.  Back by popular demand... all the Champions that sign the Charter will be entered into the 2nd Annual "Bobblehead" Awards!

Stay tuned to coming issues of REConnect for more information about June is Recreation and Parks Month activities, or visit www.june.arpaonline.ca.
