Children in Nature: Provincial Dialogue Proceedings - Now Available for Download
ARPA hosted a Dialogue on Children in Nature in Red Deer, Alberta on June 12 and 13, 2008. Like the dandelions of springtime, the event broadcast the seeds of change - inviting a diverse array of professionals and practitioners to wrestle with the growing concerns and impacts of children's disconnection from nature. Like the dandelions of summer, the Dialogue began the process of setting down deep taproots of change-suggesting Albertans must address the Nature- Deficit Disorder that is stunting an entire generation's development.
Provincial Recreation Policy - ARPA Briefing Report
The Tourism, Parks and Recreation Department of the Government of Alberta will be undertaking the development of a Provincial Recreation Policy this year. ARPA has been advocating for such a policy over the past number of years and is excited about the prospects such holds for repositioning recreation as a truly effective means for the positive, generative growth and well being of our citizens, communities and our environment. ARPA has submitted to the Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation a briefing report (click here to view the report) on the Provincial Recreation Policy which, the ARPA Board of Directors hope, will provide valuable input as the Ministry begins the policy development process. ARPA will be seeking follow-up interaction with members on this briefing report... watch for details through our website.

In Alberta...Recreation and Parks Matters! Use and Benefits of Local Government Recreation and Parks Services - Research Paper Now Available Online!

ARPA commissioned J.Harper & Associates to conduct this study as part of Alberta Active Communities, an initiative that is equipping communities across Alberta to envision and then work toward a more active future through enhanced recreation and parks services. The report summarized here grounds that work in primary data. Replicating a cross-Canada analysis originally conducted in 1996, the study takes Alberta's first-ever longitudinal look at the public's perceptions on use and benefits of local government recreation and parks services. It is a "must" read for all recreation and parks practitioners, elected officials and allied stakeholders!
