President's Message
by Kaje StuckeyThe nominating committee has been voted on and is compiling the job descriptions and needs of leadership for next year's SGES PTA. Thank you to Tracy Teal, Carrie Sweeney, Rebecca Bucci, Cheryl Bemis and Debbie Armstrong for giving their time and leadership to this important committee. In the coming weeks, job descriptions and nomination forms will be made available for you to nominate yourself or someone you may know that can help lead our successful PTA.
There are so many leaders in our school that set a great example for our children. Lately Kelly Plageman and Shannon Johnson are leading the new-this-year Rock-A-Thon Committee. Already we are seeing the efforts of their work by nearly 100 boys and over 100 girls who have signed up for the March 15 fundraiser. As noted below, it is not too late to sign-up your Cardinal for this afternoon of fun. All proceeds from the Rock-A-Thon pledges will fund the annual college scholarships our PTA grants to former Shady Grove Cardinals. The Thomas B. Fernald Scholarship is named after the first principal of Shady Grove and has granted over $25,000 to college bound Cardinals. Thank you in advance for supporting this scholarship program.

Volunteer of the Year Nominations
It's that time of year to select our "PTA Volunteer of the Year". The Virginia PTA knows the importance of having volunteers in our schools and recognizes those outstanding volunteers through this award program. This year we would like your input in the selection process. If there is someone that you feel volunteers their time and is deserving of this title, please return this form by Tuesday, March 6th. Nominations will be presented and voted on at the next Board Meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Branton Smith at kbrantonsmith@gmail.com or Sue Manley at sstjmanley@hotmail.com. |
Message From Dr. Schwab Security Audit Recommendation
Each Henrico County School completes a comprehensive safety evaluation every three years. As part of this process, members of the Henrico County Police Department, Fire Department, and the district Safety Office review all aspects of the school's safety practices and crisis preparedness. We are pleased to announce that Shady Grove received an "exceeds expectations" rating on our most recent audit that was completed at the end of January.
The audit team has now provided us with a list of recommendations concerning how to take school safety to the "next level." The team noted that two of the trees on the front loop are currently blocking the lighting in the front of the school. They have advised us to have the trees removed. Since we all enjoy our beautiful trees out front, we wanted to make our Cardinal Families aware in advance that the trees will be removed shortly for safety reasons. Thank you for your support for school safety!

Box Tops
This year we have far exceeded our goal of $1900! Thanks to all of the parents and children who have submitted box tops this school year. We couldn't have met our goal without your help!
We will soon be announcing our Spring ice cream party classroom winner. While the spring campaign is over, we still encourage you to please keep collecting and sending in your box tops.
All collected box tops will be counted and help Shady Grove finance our programs. Thanks again for your participation in the Box Tops for Education program.
