President's Message

Don't miss SGES PTA's presentation of "Race to Nowhere" which will be held at Short Pump Middle School on Wednesday, February 15 at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door. A limited number of tickets are available so pre-ordering is highly suggested.This documentary about our achievement-driven culture can only be viewed at limited select screenings. SGES PTA is excited to provide this opportunity to our parents. "Race To Nowhere" explores the strains of competing in a pressure-packed academic culture that is highly test-driven and pushes many students to the edge. A group discussion will follow the movie. Massanutten Contest

Please Show Our Teachers and Staff How Much You Appreciate Them By Ordering A Pizza Feb. 7-9 (Tue-Thur)!
Shady Grove will be competing again this year against other area Elementary Schools to win the free weekend trip to Massanutten for some of our teachers, administrative staff, and a few PTA board members. We need a minimum of 50 participants just to be entered into the contest. Last year, our school won this contest with 110 participants. The school with the highest participation in February will WIN the contest! I know we can do it again! Please take a night off from making dinner on Feb. 7th-9th and order a pizza to help our hard working teachers, staff, and board members win the trip. Thank you in advance for participating!

Summer Blast Program This summer Henrico County's Construction and Maintenance Department will replace our school's boilers and chillers. Therefore, we will be unable to host the Summer Blast Program for 2012. This popular program will be available at other sites in the area. Thank you for your understanding. Classroom Snacks and Treats: Reminder As stated in our Parent/Student Handbook (p. 23), parent volunteers must inform teachers in advance before class snack or treat items are planned and approved. All items must take into consideration students with food allergies, religious sensitivities, state nutrition guidelines, and medical restrictions. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep the children safe! R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence The Community Foundation invites parents to nominate outstanding teachers for R.E.B. Awards of up to $12,000. These awards are designed to "identify, recognize, and support teaching excellence in the metropolitan Richmond public school systems." Nomination forms are available online and in the main office at Shady Grove. The deadline for receipt of nominations is February 23, 2012. Is there an outstanding teacher you would like to recognize? School Climate Survey We are very grateful to all of our parents who have already returned this year's school climate survey. Your feedback encourages us to keep doing the things that are going well and to plan for continuous improvement. If you have not already done so, please return your survey to one of your child's classroom teachers by Friday, February 3. Thank you for your participation! |

| SCA NEWS
SCA is working to help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Our first event is a skating party that will be held at SkateNation Plus on Friday, February 3, from 4:30-6:00pm. St. Jude will receive $3.00 from skate admissions and $0.50 from meal tickets. Please remember to bring the flyer with you so we can raise as much money as possible. Our second event for St. Jude will be the Math-A-Thon in early spring. It will be completely online this year. Please stay tuned for more details! Teacher Appreciation Week
February 13-17
The PTA will be honoring the teachers with a couple of wonderful events. We will be hosting a luncheon for them on February 14th and we will have daily raffles each morning for the teachers. The raffle drawings are done on the morning announcements and the children get super excited when their teacher's name is drawn.
If you would like to donate an item or gift card for the daily raffle or if you have any questions, please contact Penny Ohman. The deadline for donations is Friday, February 3rd.
If during the week you want to honor your teacher, the resource teachers, special ed teachers or aides, please have your child create a hand written thank you note or card or simply say, "Thank You". Thank you for always beings so supportive of our Teachers and our PTA. We know the teachers are going to have a wonderful week.

Fundraising
Box Tops - Please keep collecting Box Tops for Shady Grove! Every classroom has a chance to win a PTA-sponsored ice cream party for collecting the most number of Box Tops in our spring challenge. All Box Tops must be submitted by February 17th to be counted for this 2011-12 school year and to count towards winning the ice cream party.
As always, please submit only 10 single Box Tops on each Box Tops submission sheet. Bonus Box Tops and additional Box Tops should be sent in a Ziploc bag labeled with the name of your child's teacher. Thanks again for supporting our spring Box Tops challenge!
