President's Message

Thursday, September 1st is Open House. Can't believe the summer is nearly over. PTA has been hard at work to make Open House and the school year the best yet for Shady Grove. Did you know that this is our 20th year?  Happy Birthday Shady Grove. 

What you need to bring Thursday to Open House:
  • Your School Supplies to drop off in the classroom and meet the teacher
  • Your CHILD!  This is a welcome back to school for parents AND children
  • Your Checkbook!
In an effort to make everyone's life easier, PTA is providing a new form and check-out system. The form will have your contact information already on it if you were here last year -- you just need to be sure it is all correct and how you want it in the directory. It will be in your child's class along with transportation and contact forms the teachers will require. Preview the form and fees Here.

 

New! One Check for PTA!  Tired of writing multiple checks for back-to-school forms? We have gone to one form! The new form will have:
PTA-Membership (still only $5/person) to belong to the only national organization focused on providing quality education and resources for children.
Fundraising Information  Check-writing campaign is in it's 5th year and still our major source of income. 
Yearbook!  Buy your yearbook and check it off your list.
Spirit-wear!  The Spiritwear will be set-up in the LIBRARY, come check out all we have to offer this year.
Shady Grove Directory!  Order your Shady Grove Directory and confirm your directory information.
For Grades 3-5:  Book Sox will be for sale in the Cafeteria.

 

Also open for business in the cafeteria:
  • Cafeteria staff will be taking money and checks for lunch money accounts (separate check from PTA).
  • Volunteers will be set-up to answer any questions about volunteering.
  • Membership will have a table to assist you.
  • Finance will be there to answer any questions about upcoming Spirit Nights at local restaurants, Papa John's nights, and partners in the community and will be selling the Book Sox.
  • Yearbook:  Come see examples of previous year's yearbooks and check the box to order yours today.
I hope you like the changes!  I hope they make your back-to-school paperwork and experience easier!  

 

PS:  
And . . . as you go to each of the tables, you will have a chance to sign-up for DOOR PRIZES!  We will have a spirit wear, and gift cards.  
And . . . . each child will receive a little "back-to-school" treat.  Stop in the cafeteria and the Library! 

 

Fundraising Opportunities
Please support Shady Grove by participating in the 5th Annual Check Writing Campaign.  This campaign will meet the majority of our fundraising goals for the year and alleviates the need for sales-based fundraising throughout the year.  We are asking for a minimum donation of $45 per student but would love for each family to consider becoming a Cardinal Donor by making a contribution of $100 or more.  All donations are 100% tax deductible.  Each Cardinal Donor will receive a free student directory and the new Cardinal Donor car magnet while supplies last along with some great incentives for your child and their classroom.  Thank you in advance for generosity this year. 

Book Sox for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can be purchased at the Open House as well. There will be more information on fundraising opportunities in your Open House folders and throughout the year.

 

Notes from Dr. Schwab

We look forward to welcoming approximately 710 students to Shady Grove on September 6 and to having them join us in Going Wild For Learning this year! This number includes 40 new students who hail from over 10 different states and countries. We plan to make our new children feel very welcome by involving them with returning students through the New Student Mentor Program and by holding a special coffee for new parents on September 16.

 

The new year also heralds changing roles for some important staff members. Mrs. Sonia Ford has assumed the role of Associate Principal and thereby become part of Henrico County's new district-wide leadership training program for principal candidates. In her new role, Mrs. Ford will participate even more closely in key administrative functions of the school. Mrs. Jennifer Gates will also join our administrative team this year in the role of General Resource Teacher. We are very pleased that Mrs. Gates can now share her wonderful skills with all our Shady Grove children through the resource program.   

 

We are also pleased to welcome the following teachers to Shady Grove this year:  

  • Mrs. Danna Burgess: Grade 3
  • Mrs. Cameron Smallwood               Grade 4
  • Mrs. Shannon Maroney: Grade 4    
  • Mrs. Amber Saunders, Mathematics Teacher in Residence
  • Mrs. Tori Swartz: Part-Time Art Teacher 

All of these individuals are veteran educators with outstanding track records of achievement at other schools. In addition, Mrs. Saunders is a returning Shady Grove teacher who taught both kindergarten and fifth grade with us before staying home with her children for a few years. We are looking forward to having all these talented individuals share their ideas with us and to having them become an important part of our Cardinal Family.

 

This summer also brought some school facilities improvements in the form of classroom tile for three more rooms; new benches for the front of the school (the gift of the Class of 2010); and three more Promethean Boards for our classrooms (the product of the PTA's outstanding Silent Auction and your generosity to our school.) We are very grateful for all these wonderful additions to our school.

 

Finally, we look forward to seeing you at our annual Back to School Night on Thursday, September 15. The program will begin with a PTA Meeting in the gym followed by classroom visits. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive an overview of the year ahead, so we hope that you will plan to join us. Until then, have a fabulous start to the school year!
