End-Of-Year PTA Wrap-Up
I always feel like I have to start out saying how lucky we are.  Yes, our teachers provide our children with a quality education, but from working this year behind the scenes with all the PTA volunteers, I know how truly lucky each child is that we have such dedication in our parents, grandparents, and all our committed volunteers.

Unsung heros this year are the Room Parents who stepped up time and again to provide quality communication and coordination for some PTA and all teacher needs.  They get requests from many places. Most recently was the coordination of the room baskets for the May Silent Auction.  Anyone that went to the auction commented on those spectacular baskets, and they amounted to much of our ability to fundraise over $11,000 for improving technology in our classrooms.
Vote for Budget Amendments Please
You make much of what PTA provides for our children happen with your generosity.  This year, when Treasurer Michelle Bone tallied up all the receipts, PTA had $2000 excess income over expenses.  We have two Budget Amendments for this year which require your vote.

The first is a proposal from Mr. Matt Brady, our music teacher, for a new percussion ensemble, Syncopations. This new program has start-up needs for percussion instruments,  many instruments.  PTA is asking you to approve the use of our excess income, plus some cash reserve to help Mr. Brady start his new percussion ensemble. This will not completely fund his instrument needs, but it will be a good beginning.

The second item is to approve the use of the silent-auction money for technology purchases.  PTA anticipates the purchase of more promethean boards or other significant  technology improvements over the summer, and teachers will spend their summer being trained on them.  The silent auction raised $11,500 for the fund, which was added to the $500 grant already secured this fall from a private company.  Please take a moment to complete the survey and VOTE!
A list of how our PTA families raised $30,000 for our school (excluding silent auction)

Parent Survey Results for Shady Grove

We greatly appreciate the excellent response rate we received on our 2010-2011 Parent Survey. Survey results for all Henrico County Schools can be found on the HCPS website. However, please visit the Shady Grove school website for a summary of our specific school results and a comparison of our 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school survey data.

Your feedback is always an important part of our school planning. With your support, we look forward to promoting continuous improvement in all aspects of our school program. Thank you for being such outstanding partners in the educational process!

Reminder for Fifth Grade Parents

Please remember that children may not begin 6th grade without documented proof of a Tdap vaccine booster. After June 15, proof of vaccination should be sent directly to the middle school that your child will attend. Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter!

Scholarship Award Recipients:
The Shady Grove Talent Show proceeds are used to provide scholarships to former Shady Grove Cardinals. The Thomas B Fernauld Scholarship, named for the first principal at Shady Grove, is awarded every year to students that have submitted an application outlining not only their academic success, but more importantly their community service successes.  This year's crop of applications were all deserving; however only $4,000 in scholarship money was available.

This year's recipients for $1,000 are:  Emily Zhang, Christine Ferguson, Carly Spraggins.  Holly Pauke, and Kerry Anne Sawyer were each awarded $500.

Box Tops For Education Program

Wow, Shady Grove! For the 2010-2011 school year, we earned $1,913!  Please continue to take the Box Tops challenge over the summer. A baggie will be coming home this week with each student so you and your
family can keep collecting for the fall.  Remember, EVERY Box Top counts!!

Plans for NEXT YEAR!
Mark your Calendar!  Thursday, September 1 for Open House at Shady Grove.  Drop off your school supplies and meet your new teacher!  PTA will once again be in the cafeteria with membership, check-writing, spirit wear and information on volunteering at Shady Grove.  PTA will sell some spirit-wear, plus take orders.  Bring your checkbook and get all your paperwork done.  PTA will also be collecting directory information.
More Plans -- PTA is publishing a Cookbook to help fund our Technology Initiative
We are looking to organize a cookbook committee this summer.  If you enjoy recipes, enjoy cooking, enjoy giving cookbooks as gifts, please consider volunteering.  PTA will publish a cookbook next year to continue our momentum to support the technology fund for Shady Grove.  Our Cookbook Chairperson is Ann Michele Sweeney, please e-mail her to join the committee.
Finally . . . .
Lots of information, lots to share!  If a new family moves into the neighborhood, forward this e-mail to them, make sure they click on the www.sgespta.org link to join our e-mail blast list.
And . . . if you have graduated on from Shady Grove and wish to unsubscribe, please take a moment to do that too!
