On Friday, April 1, we will end the third quarter of the school year; hold our annual Career Day for students; and celebrate the children's accomplishments with a half-day holiday! While you and your families enjoy a "long weekend," teachers will be busy preparing third quarter report cards, which will be distributed on April 14. The following are some other highlights of the busy month ahead:
· Teachers have just completed third quarter benchmark assessments that were administered from March 28- March 31. These assessments help teachers to diagnose any areas of weakness in student performance and to keep you informed concerning your child's mastery of the grade level curriculum.
· We have begun the planning process for the 2011-2012 school year. We are projected to have 702 students next year, as opposed to our current enrollment of 752. Based on these projections for next year, we are planning for five homeroom sections at kindergarten through third grade, and six sections each at Grades 4 and 5.
· Once again this year, we will invite parent input to the class placement process and the window for input will be April 15 to May 6. Due to time constraints, input from previous years and information received after May 6 cannot be part of the planning process. Please review the placement letter that will go home on April 14 for more details, and plan to join us at our Class Placement Parent Coffee on April 29 to learn more about the total process.
· Kindergarten Registration will take place on Thursday, April 7. Staff will be available in the library from 8 AM to 4 PM and from 6 PM to 8 PM to register new kindergarten children. Please encourage your friends and neighbors with kindergarten children, as well as families with children new to Shady Grove, to register early. Our registration secures our staffing, so this encouragement is extremely important to everyone!
· Thank you for your great generosity during our "March Madness of Giving!" With your support, our SCA, under the sponsorship of Ms. Taylor and Mrs. Sanborn, provided 2,625 pounds of food to the Virginia Food Bank, boxes of supplies for Freedom House, and many needed items for Camp Comfort.
As we enter the all-important fourth quarter of the school year, we thank you for your support in continuing to make school responsibilities a priority despite all the distractions of the hectic spring months. Working together, we will make the last few months of the year a high water mark for both fun and learning! Have an "Awesome April!"
