Talent Show Success!

Thank you Becky Harper, Kelly Plageman, Lynn Irwin and Melinda Tatum for helping Shady Grove put on another banner week of showcase talent.  This is Becky, Lynn and Melinda's final performance at Shady Grove as their youngest children are all moving on to middle school.  Thanks for all you have done for the past seven plus years!  And we look forward to yet another talented season in the hands of Kelly Plageman and her team.

PTA Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Susan Schools, our VP of Communication, for being awarded Volunteer of the year for 2010-2011.

Susan has provided many updates and improvements on our communication this year, this bi-weekly blast being one.  She also helped move Shady Grove to the nListHelp sign-up site and trained many families on how to use it.  She also helped facilitate a better open-house for our parents and serves on various ad-hoc committees when needed.

Thank you Susan for your dedication and commitment to making Shady Grove a great place to learn!

Happy 400th Birthday Henrico County!

Join the PTA for a reception after the 4th grade Virginia History program on Thursday, April 14th.  We will be enjoying cupcakes and lemonade while representatives from Henrico will share information about the history of our county and the Shady Grove area.

End-of-Year Picnic and Silent Auction

Please join us on May 19th for the End-of-Year Picnic and now also a SILENT AUCTION.  The PTA is organizing a silent auction to include summer camps and kid friendly items to help ease you into summer.  If you have items to donate or wish to help organize, please let Sue Manley (sstjmanley@hotmail.com) or Kaje Stuckey (kajestuckey@gmail.com) know.  The PTA is assisting Shady Grove to update classroom technology.  We hope to add to the Promethean Board's in the school as well as be ready to update the computer lab as the county is looking to modernize existing hardware and software.  We hope you are as enthusiastic to assist.

Chair Found in Outdoor Garden

An attractive, red-metal garden or deck chair with red seat cushion was found in Shady Grove's Outdoor Classroom.  Please contact Mrs. Land at 364.0825 if it is yours.

Eco Fest April 8th 4 to 8 pm
The 2011 Annual Eco Fest, a fun-filled festival where families can learn what they can do to create a sustainable environment for the whole community, will be held at Colonial Trail Elementary School on Friday, April 8, 4 pm to 8 pm.

The
event will feature eco-themed games, lots of inflatable bouncy houses, a cake walk and an environmentally-themed silent auction. Families can enjoy sweets, treats and picnic fare from local eateries. Exhibitors focused on the earth, reducing energy and the environment will include Whole Foods, TFC Recycling, Junior Master Gardeners, VCU, University of Richmond, Green Living Education Center of VA, and the James River Association.  Kids will be thrilled by a special appearance by both our school mascot and Snoopy from Kings Dominion.  Participants are invited to reduce, reuse and recycle by bringing a book to exchange at our Book Swap.

Children's tickets are $12 each per child at the gate. Tickets for all adults and children under 3 are free.  Kids are guaranteed to come home more knowledgeable about the environment, tired and ready for bed.
Race to Nowhere April 13th 7 pm
Deep Run High School is showing Race to Nowhere in their auditorium on Wednesday April 13th at 7 pm.

A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children's lives.  Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace; students are disengaged; stress-related illness and depression are rampant; and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.  Race to Nowhere which is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

Get your discount movie ticket today online to see the documentary film that is sweeping the country.  Tickets will be sold at the door for $15, but you are encouraged to buy online for $10.
SCA Thanks Shady Grove Families!

The Shady Grove Family really showed that they were "Marvelous, Magnanimous Givers in March!"  The SCA was able to make substantial donations to the Central Virginia Food Bank, Freedom House, and Comfort Zone Camp.  Thank you everyone for being so generous!
