Thanks to the participation of 22 members of the Deep Run Marching Band, the first annual Cardinal Thanksgiving Parade provided a festive start to the holiday season at Shady Grove. On Wednesday, November 24, the parade, complete with floats, balloons, banners, and twirlers, marched down the school corridors, surprising both teachers and students with an outpouring of holiday cheer. We are very grateful to our Deep Run parade partners for making this special event possible.
With the Thanksgiving Holiday behind us, here are some December highlights:
- Fourth and fifth grade parents found something new in their children's report cards for the first nine weeks. Henrico County Public Schools is now providing "Fitness Report Cards" for our fourth and fifth graders. Children are tested in the five components of fitness and health (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.) When a child's score falls within the recommended range of fitness for each measure, it means the child has achieved a healthy level of fitness. Fitness report cards will be distributed to fourth and fifth graders at the end of the first and fourth quarters.
- Congratulations to our fifth graders who were selected to represent Shady Grove in the district Book Bowl Competition. On Wednesday, December 1, the following fifth graders will compete with students from across the school district to demonstrate their knowledge and quick recall of information from a selected group of books: Quinn B., Thomas G., Jonathan H., Ryan H., Anjali J., Ashley M., Max N., Sarah N., Navindra S., and Daniel W. We appreciate the hard work of their Book Bowl sponsor, Mrs. Lisa Blouch, who has done a great job preparing the children for the competition.
- We are all looking forward to the traditional fifth grade holiday concert. On Thursday, December 16, our fifth graders will entertain us with a musical program entitled Here We Come A-Caroling. Feature numbers will include "Peace on Earth," "Hanukkah Dance," and "Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child." We hope that you will join us at 7 PM for this holiday brightener!
- Finally, on December 17, the Jingle Bell Jog returns to Shady Grove to send the children dancing off to a wonderful holiday.
As 2010 draws to a close, we reflect with gratitude on all the wonderful support you have provided for our school programs throughout the year. We wish all our Cardinal Families a happy and restful holiday surrounded by family and friends!
