Message from President Tom Taylor, September, 2011

Here we are with temperatures changing as we come to the close of summer. We have had successful festivities throughout Poulsbo's summer months. Now I am looking forward to our Americana Musical Festival on Saturday, September 10, at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park. I hope everyone can join us and check out the new mural on the side of the Boehm's Chocolates, designed by Bill Austin. It portrays our Viking heritage with wonderful faces of our ancestors.
We encourage everyone to support our local downtown businesses with all the specialties that they offer to our visitors and residents alike. Poulsbo is a family oriented community and this event is to emphasis that piece of our culture. The Americana Music Festival leads into school beginning again, and the wonderful fall season that shows off beautiful vistas of Poulsbo.
Our Chamber board and staff look forward to serving our members and providing great meetings in September at the Sons of Norway and in October at Olympic College. We encourage you to "bring a friend to lunch," someone who wants to learn more about the Chamber. We invite businesses like John Deere and Marine View Beverage to come and share a meal to learn of the benefits of our chamber. Chamber membership is a community outreach to the Greater Poulsbo and the surrounding areas. Many of our businesses have chosen to offer Military discounts to our service members and we appreciate your decision to do that.
I look forward to seeing you at businesses in downtown Poulsbo, College Marketplace, Poulsbo Village and Viking Avenue. It is my pleasure to be your President of this great chamber of commerce.
Regards,
Tom Taylor, President |

Director's Message:
It is so hard to believe that the Labor Day weekend is here and our young people will be heading back to school very soon. Parents are out getting school supplies and clothes. Thank you to all of our members who were able to donate some school supplies to Fishline as that really makes our young people feel at home.
Our members are truly great people helping each other with that little extra that is needed. This year we all need to be mindful of our friends and the children of our community.
In August we had an update from both Mayor Becky Erickson and Representative Sherry Appleton. None of the economic news is fantastic but we continue to invite new businesses to Poulsbo and look for additional opportunities to fill the empty store fronts. Currently I believe that there are only two spaces open on Front Street. New companies are still looking into and opening on Viking Way. We will miss Courtesy Ford but hope that a large retailer will find that area an attractive place to locate.
We need to help fill our two hotels and the Chamber continues to promote "Staycations" to the Seattle area, north through Jefferson County and British Columbia and south to our neighbors in Oregon. New Military families have been coming in to look into relocating to our lovely town, along with an influx of seniors.
Let's get ready for a spectacular, colorful Fall. Come down and enjoy our Americana Music Festival, one of two fundraisers for the Greater Poulsbo Chamber. The date is Saturday, September 10, 2011. There will be fun for the kids, food from all of our great restaurants and two of our new micro breweries will be serving on the north end of Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park. Come down from noon to 7 p.m. and make a day of it.
Respectfully,
Adele Heinrich, Executive Director |

Military Corner
August 30, 2011 - Associated Press
by Julie Pace
MINNEAPOLIS - Recalling "those awful attacks," President Barack Obama saluted the 9/11 generation of veterans Tuesday and publicly relished the prospect of U.S. forces getting out of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
"They have borne an extraordinary burden, with more than 2 million of our service members deploying to the war zones," Obama said. "Hundreds of thousands have deployed again and again, year after year. Never before has our nation asked so much of our all-volunteer force - that 1 percent of Americans who wears the uniform."
Speaking before thousands of veterans and their families attending the American Legion's annual convention, Obama said the Americans who have worn the uniform since Sept. 11 have put the nation in a position of strength and have earned their place among the greatest of generations. |
