Message from the President, July 2010Linda Lincoln

Well, I have finally received a list I have wanted for the past 7 months.  One of my personal goals as your Chamber President was to compile a comprehensive list of the people who have served as President for the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce.  Since the list is now in my hot little hands, I have a couple of trivia questions to ask:

There is a father and son who have served as President of the Chamber who are they?  What year did the Chamber elect its first woman President?  Did you know that in one year the Chamber had three people serve in the role as President, what year was it?  I will reveal the answers later in my comments.  Thank you to everyone who helped gather this information.  As I have previously mentioned I am somewhat of a history buff and it was important to me and I believe the greater business community to find out who has impacted the development of our business community.   It is incumbent upon us to recognize those who have come before us.  During our upcoming mid-year planning session your Board will be considering options regarding how we record this information for posterity sake.  I will let you know the outcome next month.  In the meantime if you have any suggestions please e-mail admin@poulsbochamber.com or me at lmlincol@timberlandbank.com.

Summer activities are in full swing!  The long time Poulsbo tradition of celebrating the 4th of July (3rd of July), early is alive and well thanks to the Viking Fest Corporation.  All can enjoy Summer Nights at the Bay, Farmers Market and Second Saturday Art Walks and more.  I hope all of those golfers out there are honing their skills to play in the upcoming Chamber Golf Tournament.  As one of our primary fundraising events, we hope that all interested parties sign up to participate.   Remember all players are welcome even the "duffers" of which I am a card caring member (well card caring goes a bit far!), but you get my drift.  Time to get out and PLAY!

Now here are the answers to the questions: Father and Son, Dale and Glenn Anderson; Dale served in 1965 and Glenn in 2009.  First woman Chamber President 1963 Ruby Watland and finally the year there were three Chamber Presidents was 1985 (Susan Westby, Mark Christel, Ken Smith).

  Best regards,

Linda M. Lincoln, President

Getting to know our Members:  - Each month the Chamber of Commerce chooses one member to be featured so that other members can get to know the business or non-profit group involved in our chamber.  This month we are featuring:
Accurate Builders Michael Glading

Accurate Builders.

I started working in the construction business as a carpenter in Colorado in 1972. I c
ame to the Seattle area in 1981 to take a position as supervisor in a light commercial/residential construction firm.

After working in the Seattle area for most of the 80's, I decided to relocate to the Poulsbo area because I was totally taken by the beauty and slower pace of the area.
I formed Accurate Builders in 1994, because I wanted to focus on using both my design and remodeling skills and experience together in one operation.
Our mission at Accurate Builders is to provide exceptional quality residential design and remodeling services to the Poulsbo community and surrounding Kitsap County area, with an emphasis on customer service . Our numerous local and state remodeling excellence awards and a long list of satisfied clients are a testament to this mission.
As for what I wanted to be when I grew up, when I was young, for quite a w
hile I wanted to be a major league baseball player.
My first job ever was a neighborhood paper route.
In my "spare" time, I enjoy reading Fine Homebuilding, Dwell and other remodeling magazines regularly.
As for who is my hero, that would be Frank Lloyd Wright. His approach to architecture and his designs cont
inue to inspire me.

Council Corner:

Poulsbo is experiencing the same financial challenges that are affecting all governments in this difficult economy. Due to what had been high cash reserves and a low level of debt, to date we have made few cuts but we now have less reserves and more debt. This will be a painful budget season. I hope that our City will have the discipline to make tough choices and align our projected spending with projected revenues and that our citizens will understand our belt tightening.

While reducing expenditures, it will still be essential to maintain the foresight to avoid short term decisions with significant negative long term consequences. One that I am concerned about is our plan to sell our existing city hall and its parking, and that decision's impact on the future ability for a downtown parking garage.

Downtown Poulsbo has struggled with parking shortages as it has grown. Parking was added in the 50's, expanded in the 70's and again in the mid 80's. We once again have a parking shortage. For previous parking improvements, the City and nearby businesses contributed, but some businesses further away, as well as the Port of Poulsbo (with its' 390 boat slips) contributed little to nothing.

Poulsbo has many things going for us: a spectacular waterfront location, unique community character, many diverse businesses, a community that pulls together, and a historic downtown that our community treasures. But we are losing customers and choking the economic vitality of downtown by allowing employees and boaters out for the weekend, to fill the downtown parking and send customers elsewhere.

Parking garages are at best costly, with minimum costs beginning around $15,000 per stall, but easily tripling up to $45,000-50,000 per stall. An ideal parking garage is close, not highly visible to allow a simple utilitarian structure, is a large and an efficient rectangular shape that fits double parking bays, has minimal need for ramping, and is as cheap as possible. An inefficient site, will drive costs up. Choosing the right site can save millions in future construction costs. Everyone likes free unlimited parking, never getting ticketed, and we'd also like to find parking whenever we need it. Ideally someone else will pay to solve the problem That clearly hasn't worked.

Yes, additional parking at the new city hall will help with parking at night and on weekends. But when new businesses fill the current vacant building, where will those customers park?  No, we may not be able to afford to build a garage today
but nor can we afford to sell the best and most cost effective site for a future garage. Our existing city hall site (which includes a back corner piece with employee parking) is currently listed for sale. Not selling that portion of the property and combining it with the King Olav parking lot, would allow the future construction of a large simple, rectangular parking structure with efficient double loaded parking corridors, that is both hidden from view and is close to downtown. As an architect and a member of our current Parking Committee, I've reviewed all the other suggested locations for a future garage, and absolutely believe there is no other location that could provide as close and as cost effective parking solution.

No one wants $10 parking and massive parking fines but we need to consider incremental steps like paid parking after a few hours and parking enforcement. The Port's mission is economic development. They need to be part of the solution and help provide long term parking for their own customers. We need to take steps to provide long term parking and enforce that nearby parking is available to customers. And no, our City government cannot afford to take on additional costs for a downtown parking garage. There are no free solutions. Our businesses, property owners, the Port, City and community, need to work together to plan for a long term parking structure downtown and the immediate need to buy the back portion of the city hall site for parking. If we let this opportunity go by and sell that critical back corner of the city hall site, our lack of action is likely to increase the costs of a future parking garage by many, many times.

We cannot afford to make this mistake and end up with parking solutions that are both further away and costs far more. We cannot afford to sell off the economic future of Poulsbo's downtown by selling the essential cornerstone for the most feasible and cost effective future downtown parking garage.

Sincerely,
Linda Berry-Maraist, Poulsbo City Council

Director's Message:

Many of you have been aware of the Parking Advisory Committee, which the city started to address the parking problems in the downtown area.  Here is a recap from the meetings I have attended to stay informed.  The Committee has asked that some re-stripping begin as soon as possible on Jensen in front of Bank of America and the shops around Jak's Cafe.  That will give about 8 more parking spots total.  There is discussion of adding parking on the east side of the street but there is a question of when to move the mail box in front of the post office up to 3rd Avenue.
The City will also be putting up better signage on Anderson Parkway to direct cars from that lot, when it is busy, to King Olav parking lot or the new spaces on Front or that will be created on Jensen.  The signs will be the blue international "P" to make them simple and easy to read.  No decision has been made about Anderson Parkway so I don't see changes for that area as yet.  However, the police will be enforcing the parking at night in Anderson Parkway to keep people from leaving their cars for days, especially during the summer tourist months.
The Committee came to the conclusion at the last meeting that we should have a parking garage somewhere in the downtown area.  The most likely area is where the current City Hall is now and provisions would be made with Martha and Mary for land easements, etc.  Of course, funding is the issue during these economic times.  I don't believe that a clear course was set for ways to fund such a parking garage but that remains to be seen.
The Parking Committee meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.  Meetings are open to the public and public comment is always welcome.

South Viking Avenue Roadway:  Improvements have begun on two construction projects on South Viking Avenue.  The projects include construction of pervious concrete sidewalks, a new center turn lane, storm drainage improvements, traffic medians, sewer and water main extensions, street lighting, new bike lanes and a new sign welcoming drivers, bikers and pedestrians to the City.
Construction hours are limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.  The highest priority for the city is to keep traffic moving but there may be some one-way traffic periods during work hours.
There is a new "Velkommen to Poulsbo" sign on Hwy 305 and Viking Avenue on the west side along with a new kiosk.  I believe a simple call to the city will allow you to put up posters, but please check with City Hall first.

Sandy's Gourmet Indulgence:
We specialize in our gourmet confections. We started with gourmet caramel and chocolate apples and have enjoyed making them so much that we kept adding to our menu. We not only have gourmet caramel apples, our menu has pretzel nuggets hand dipped in our home made caramel and chocolate with or with out pecans, gourmet mallows (marshmallows) dipped in caramel and chocolate with sprinkles or pecans and pecan turtles. We added butter creams and truffles. Hand dipped fresh strawberries and fresh cherries. We also offer three kinds of gourmet sandwiches: Hawaiian BBQ shredded beef on a bun, gourmet chicken salad and egg salad on a croissant with the choice of Polynesian coleslaw or Waldorf (apple) salad.
We produce our products at Farm Kitchen in Poulsbo, Washinton.
We currently sell our products at farmers markets: Poulsbo, Bremerton, and Port Gamble. We have also sold at the Viking Fest and the Humane Societies Kitsap County Pet Walk and hope to sell at many more of the local events. We also cater parties, weddings and business meetings.
We currently offer a 10% discount to the Military and would like to extend this to the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Members.

Liberty Bay Bakery & Cafe:  After being away from Poulsbo for ten years, brothers Matthew and James Weightman (1997 and 1999 NKHS graduates, respectively) are happy to announce they have returned to the town they rode their bicycles around as children and have purchased Liberty Bay Bakery and Café at 18996 Front Street.

A 2007 graduate of L'Academic Pastry School in Maryland and a six-year Marine Corps Veteran, Jim will be handling all of the baking.  Having worked at several high-volume and reputed Washington DC kitchens as a French pastry chef, he looks to maintain the quality offered by the bakery's prior owners while introducing several new creations of his own.  He specializes in true pastry cuisine, scratch baking and minimum ingredient, no preservative output.

Matt is starting a second career with this venture, having resigned a high-level executive position at a major Midwestern casino, for the chance to operate and grow a true family business.  With an accounting degree from the University of Washington and years of management responsibility and experience under his belt, he looks to take the template presented the family and nurture growth while staying focused on accessibility to the public and top-shelf customer service.

It is an honor to be home after so many years away, and we never would have thought, through our years at Poulsbo Elementary, Poulsbo Junior High, and at North Kitsap High, that we would be in a position to share our passion with people in our hometown.  It is our responsibility to you, and our commitment, to provide the best product possible.  It's our name, and our face, and we recognize what that means to be the owners of Liberty Bay Baker.  We hope to see you soon.

Port Gamble General Store:  Hi!  I'd like to introduce myself.  My name is Kim Campbell and I'm the latest owner of the Port Gamble General Store & Cafe, along with my fiance, Erik Kleiva.  Erik and I are completely exhausted but thoroughly enjoying our new business.  We have given the General Store a new look on the inside.  We spent January and February remodeling and redefining the space by building new counters, moving the ice cream case, putting in an espresso machine, building a new wall separating the new full service cafe from the retail area, and putting in a new commercial kitchen to accommodate the new menu.

The renovations, new cafe, and fresh retail items have been very well received by both, our local and tourist clientele.  In the cafe we believe in fresh and home made.  We are excited to serve produce, seafood, and chicken from local sources! Up front, our baristas create delicious hand dipped milkshakes such as Mallory's Caramel-espresso shake.  We offer complimentary gift wrap with purchase in our retail area and have a big selection of cards, gifts, and housewares, as well as souvenirs.  Our wine selection features and focuses on small Washington wineries, and man, does this state grow some great grapes!

Erik and I both have previous retail experience.  Erik owned the "Radio Guy" in Poulsbo for many years, and I owned a flower and gift shop, "Rugosa Rose", here in Port Gamble.  I have also owned a restaurant, Wildflower Cafe, in Kingston from 2000-2002.

State Farm Insurance Ribbon Cutting:

The local State Farm Insurance Agency for Joyce Rogers had their grand opening Friday, the 18th of June.  Joyce Rogers prepared a selection of wonderful food by herself.  We are trying to determine if she should have been a chef instead of a insurance agent.  Joyce strives to make all of her clients feel like they are at home.  I believe that some of them even come by for the coffee and goodies that she prepares almost every day!  Now that's a warm feeling.

State Farm Ribbon Cutting We appreciate the Mayor and of our Chamber members coming down to welcome Joyce and her "family".

SF A Real Family Affair

Joyce's work family is sharp and compliments her entire approach to serving the customer.
Saturday Art Walks:

Historic Downtown Poulsbo is sponsoring Monthly Second Saturday Art Walk beginning on June 12, 2010.  Seven (7) galleries plus a considerable number of merchants are participating.  Each member business that is participating will have a sign indicating they weill be staying open for the event.  The hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and you are likely to find your favorite restaurant open as well for relaxing after you shop up and down Front Street.  Invite your friends over from "the other side" for a quaint evening in Little Norway.

Sponsored by:  Front Street Gallery, Potlatch Gallery, Shorelines Gallery, Verksted Gallery, Ascend Gallery, The Twisted Brush and The Eagles Nest.
