Message from the President, June 2010
We are now in the throws of the most wonderful time of the year. The spring/summer tourist season is here and it is time for all of us to play. We had a great start with another successful Viking Fest event. It takes much hard work to continue to produce Viking Fest and I would like to extend many thanks to all of the volunteers that make it happen. GREAT JOB! As we move through the nice weather that we all hope will happen this summer, it is time to hit the water ways, camp in the parks, and generally recreate. As your President it is my hope that the dollars dedicated to bring others to Poulsbo this season will reap benefits for all. One of the groups that also help to bring tourism to our area is the Kitsap Visitors and Convention Bureau (VCB). On May 27th the VCB held a conference; I would like to thank Shawna Seals, Tammy Matson and Nicole Robbins for attending as the delegation from Poulsbo. Also, worth a big shout out is the group that puts together Viking Cup. Memorial weekend saw the hotels full with many families visiting the area, some for the first time and all participating in Viking Cup! Yet another dedicated group of volunteers that make things happen in Poulsbo.
As this message is turning into my "thankful" message I would like to take the time to talk about the Board of Directors. Your Chamber is an association of business people organized to improve our community, and specifically to promote the interests of the business community. The Chamber is managed by a Board of Directors. Within the Board of Directors is an Executive committee. The Executive committee consists of the President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The total number of Board members can be no less than 11 and no more than 13. The Board of Directors is active in all aspects of the Chamber. Several members on the Board serve as chairpersons for various committees and others serve on committees. Since this is officially the middle of my term as your President, I would like to personally and publicly thank all those who serve on the Board and all of those people that volunteer on committees. You are AWESOME! We can not be successful without the many people who step forward with a "can do" attitude and a positive approach.
Officially, the Chamber has been in operation since 1956, unofficially since the birth of the community business leaders has supported community activities. The Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce is successful because of all of you, the membership. You see value in contributing to the betterment of not only the business community, but the community at large. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Linda M. Lincoln, President |
Getting to know our Members: - Each month the Chamber of Commerce chooses one member to be featured so that other members can get to know the business or non-profit group involved in our chamber. This month we are featuring:
The North Kitsap Optimist Club is the local arm of Optimist International, an association of more than 2,900 clubs around the world dedicated to "Bringing Out the Best in Kids." Adult volunteers join Optimist Clubs to conduct positive service projects in their communities aimed at providing a helping hand to youth. Each Optimist Club determines the needs of the young people in its community and conducts programs to meet those needs.
During our three years the North Kitsap Optimist Club has had "kite-flying" days for the preschoolers at Martha and Mary Daycare, we read at a local elementary school, we have sent books to Kenya, worked at Fishline during the holidays and have sponsored two families each year with Christmas gifts and food. We built a picnic bench for Fish Park, volunteered for Ready Relief at Vinland elementary, did after-school art classes at Wolfle, do a little pickup on Front Street in Downtown Poulsbo, and we hold a local Essay Contest (this year's Essay Contest winner was 11th in the total District). This year we served over 456 young people at Vinland Elementary with a Tri-Star Basketball program. The members of our club and some optimist friends spent three days doing the primary basics of basketball with all the 1st grade through 5 grade classes. Each child was timed as they dribbled their way through an obstacle course, then they shot baskets from the free-throw line and did some lay up shots, and then there was the passing station with a great target set up for the kids. Everyone had a lot of fun, especially the adults!
On June 26th, in conjunction with the Poulsbo branch of the Kitsap County Library system, our club is presenting an "Internet Safety" program. Statistics show that 99% of all teens have access to the Internet and 94% of students admit to being cyber bullied, but did not tell an adult. It is important to protect young people and Optimist clubs are attempting to fill that role. The information presented on the 26th will be geared to both adults and young people alike. Everyone is invited. Please watch for the flyer detailing all the events for that day.
We appreciate the opportunity to inform you about our club and all of the things we do in Poulsbo. Please check out www.optimist.org for more information or call 360-779-6478 and speak with our current President, Constance Gooding.
Cordially,
Bob Heinrich, Past President |

Council Corner:
This is my first article since becoming, as my friends in PSRC describe me, a "Recovering Politician." Returning to politics after a two-year hiatus reminds me of one statement "you can never go home again." Meaning things will never be as they were when you left. In spite of your desire to get back to business, most of what you were doing before is not being prosecuted by other council members, and usually very well at that. So, the new "old" guy has to find a new niche in which to demonstrate his prowess. While losing out on Transportation was discomforting, there are other areas that are just as challenging. Case in point, business! This is one area that all politicians espouse but only a very few get to do anything substantive about it. During the early years of my last bout with city politics I became excited about some huge far-reaching projects that could have changed the jobs landscape for Poulsbo. The largest impact would have been a proposed 500 employee Call Center for a major insurance company. Unfortunately, we could not find the space required in our fair city. Lesson learned; find out if it will fit before you reach for the ring. You just might grab it!
However, I never give up. Its like having the second best hand in a game of poker, the next hand has got to be yours. Along with the other Council members, I will do my utmost to enhance the business atmosphere in Poulsbo. But, the prize goes with landing a big one! My present endeavor is to team up with the "Clean Technology Trade Alliance" in their venture into South American and hopefully basing that part of their business in Poulsbo. As with the insurance venture, this surrounds personal contacts here and abroad and I am encouraged by the attention we are getting.
I don't see us getting a magnetic rail systems anytime soon, another of my endeavors, but during our joint meeting with the Bainbridge Island Council in March 2010 the subject came up during off-camera conversations. It seems their City has set aside funding for just such a system. Anyway, why should the Navajo tribe have that show all to themselves? And then there is still the question of a Passenger Only Ferry between Poulsbo and Seattle.
Sincerely,
Jim Henry, Poulsbo City Council, Postiion #7 |

| Director's Message:
What does your chamber do? We do answer questions for local residents and tourists alike, along with giving you business news, printing nice membership brochures, and advertise to the outside world that we are here! Our mission is listed on the front of the Membership brochure. It is: "to encourage and promote the interests of our membership and the business community by defining, developing, and implementing programs and services which enhance economic activity and quality of life for the Greater Poulsbo area."
Our chamber keeps political involvement at a minimum however, we do invite speakers who speak on current topics and issues impacting local business. We enjoy a vitality from our members because more and more of them are getting involved. As Chamber President Linda Lincoln always says "you have to follow your money." Committees and projects are open to every member and we welcome your involvement.
We are rolling out a Shop Local program in the next few months and hope that you will rejoice in the possibility that more local residents will shop close to home. Poulsbo has much to offer and we continue to bring new business to the area. Our Chamber is comprised of 13 board members and as Linda mentioned above they are actively involved in committees and building our Chamber to be the best and biggest in the county.
Regards to all,
Adele Heinrich, Executive Director |

City of Poulsbo Parking Advisory Committee:
A City Advisory Committee is grappling with parking problems in the downtown area. Interests represented on this advisory committee include downtown businesses, property owners, residents, the Port of Poulsbo, as well as three members of the Poulsbo City Council. Topics under discussion include:
-
needs/conflicts of short-term parking for shoppers versus day-long parking for downtown employees versus extended parking for boaters
-
improved signage to indicate what kinds of parking are available and where
-
parking time limits, as well as associated enforcement policies
-
potential for cooperative arrangements with privately owned parking lots in the downtown area
-
near-term possibilities for additional on-street parking
-
steps (if any) that can be taken toward eventual construction of a downtown parking garage
The desirability and feasibility of these options are yet to be determined. The Committee is tentatively scheduled to provide its conclusions and recommendations to the Poulsbo City Council before Labor Day.
The Committee meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Poulsbo City Hall Council Chamber. Meetings are open to the public, and public comment is welcome at each meeting. You can follow the progress of this advisory committee on the City's web page.

At Mora Ice Cream, our goal is to make ice cream the old-fashioned way, the way your great-grandmother did, combining the best fresh ingredients she could find locally, with the deep-seated desire to nourish and care for her family. We don't take shortcuts or use powdered pre-mixes. We develop our own recipes, carefully testing them over and over, to make certain that one ingredient doesn't overwhelm another, to ensure a texture that is smooth and creamy, and to create the most intensely flavored ice creams and sorbets you've ever tasted.
Mora ice cream may taste rich and decadent, but don't let that fool you. Each serving contains less butterfat than most premium manufactured ice cream. That's because our old-world recipes rely on fresh, pure ingredients, not butterfat, to create that wonderful, intense flavor. So go ahead...indulge in the delectable taste of Mora.
For us, the experience of eating ice cream is just as important as the ice cream itself. So that you could share the experience of "meeting and eating" with your family, friends and neighbors we opened a Mora in Poulsbo.

Vivian Henderson is the Executive Director of the Kitsap Alliance of Property Owners (KAPO) - one of the oldest, largest, and most respected organizations in the state dedicated to the protection of citizen's constitutional property rights. Vivian, and the non-profit, non-partisan organization she represents, has become a formidable force on the local political scene - working to limit overreaching government control of private property, while supporting responsible, scientifically-defensible wildlife habitat protection and conservation of natural resources.
KAPO believes that unencumbered ownership of private property is one of the historic cornerstones of free and prosperous societies. Where governments have assumed ownership, either outright or indirectly through land use and environmental regulation, the results have invariably proved inimical to the interests and welfare of its citizens. Unfortunately, our state and local governments are continuing their regulatory barrage. The public, however, is showing signs of awakening to the impact of these rules on their lives. People interested in this issue are invited to visit www.kapo.org
