Message from the President, May 2010Linda Lincoln

"Who little ventures, little gain" Ivar Aasen.  Ivar Aasen was a Norwegian poet, lexicographer and playwright who devoted most of his life to the study of the various dialects of Norway.  He is considered to be the author of modern Nynorsk language.  Why is this important to you as a member if the Poulsbo Chamber?  Well, in my efforts to understand our little piece of Norway, I am interested in how we as a community came to be.  With the strong roots to Norway that can be traced to our town, I want to understand the cultural influences that exist here.  I have been reading the Spirit of Poulsbo and doing research here and there, only to find that although we have a cultural heritage that is Norwegian we have grown, expanded and have become much more than just that heritage.  Poulsbo is known as "Little Norway", but our town has slowly moved from that quaint little Norwegian village to one that has been influenced by the economic times and other cultures (which is a good thing).

Now getting back to Ivar, as the author of the modern Nynorsk language his work focused on finding words that had similar meaning and crafting the words to cross all dialects to form this new language.  It is my belief that we as a business community are coming to a cross road that will require us to seek out the words that will best describe who we are, who we want to be and how we see the future of Poulsbo.  Like Ivar we will be the authors of the new language of Poulsbo.  That is why I ask you as a member of this community to help with the process.  Put forth effort to become involved make your voice and opinion known and work to secure the kind future our forefathers sought when they traveled those many miles to plant their roots in Poulsbo.

The work to create that language is happening now, your Chamber is one of the first places to begin the process of shaping the future of Poulsbo.  Not one person I have ever met will think of Poulsbo as any other place other than "Little Norway".  We need to embrace our heritage, enhance the visual (appearance of the town), and create the "language" that the future will speak.  I hope you will consider this message as a call to action and will step forward volunteer on a committee, attend a Chamber event and become involved.

Best regards,

Linda M. Lincoln, President

Director's Message:
It is May again and we find ourselves getting excited about two large events.  In addition to the economic impact that both Viking Fest and Viking Cup bring to the City of Poulsbo and surrounding area, it is just FUN!  These are both events where you and your family can spend time together watching the parade, sharing lunch at the Sons of Norway, or watching young people play soccer.
May will see hanging flower baskets on Front Street along with flower pots filling Front Street with color.  The sun is out and Liberty Bay is full of beautiful boats and visitors are filling the shops in Viking Village and Front Street.  We have a new retailer in Olhava, Big 5 Sporting Goods set to open around the 20th of May.  Shopping locally is the key to growing our special little town.  Check out what your fellow chamber members have in their shops and what services they provide for you right here at home.
Don't forget that May 9th is Mother's Day so spend some special time with Mom in Poulsbo.  There are so many great things to do in and around our city.

Carol Glad - I am excited to be a part of the Edward Jones family as well as the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce.  As a financial advisor for Edward Jones I am looking forward to assisting members of the community with their retirement planning and reaching all their financial goals.  My office is in downtown Poulsbo and I am thrilled to be so close to all the activities and events that are coming up.

My family has been a part of Poulsbo for 20 years.  My oldest daughter recently graduated from North Kitsap High School and my youngest daughter is currently at Kingston Middle School.  I have been a volunteer with the North Kitsap School District, Camp Fire, North Kitsap Little League and North Kitsap Lacrosse.

I look forward to meeting all the chamber members and being a part of such a fantastic organization.

Chamber members--
It's not too late to sign up for a booth at this year's PAWS WagFest event, to be held May 16 at Battle Point Park. The event will benefit PAWS' veterinary financial assistance program and its pet food bank (both active in the Poulsbo area), and will include a wide array of canine-oriented demonstrations (e.g., disc dogs and canine freestyle dancing), creative contests (e.g., pet/owner lookalike), and more than 25 vendors. Vendor booth fee is only $60, but the deadline for sign-up is May 7.
Also plenty of time to put together a fundraising team, representing your business, to compete for the coveted WagFest Cup (and the top prize of a private screening for 50 of any film shown at Bainbridge Cinemas -- popcorn and sodas included).
