Message from the President, April 2010Linda Lincoln

Spring has truly sprung!  If you didn't take the time to enjoy the warm and sunny weather these past days, find the time now to get rejuvenated by the sun's rays.  Not too far in the future our community will begin to enjoy the benefit of the many Festivals and Events that help to bind us together as a business and family community.  Your Chamber is active in many of the events that are enjoyed throughout the year; these events take place with the volunteer support and financial support of many Chamber members as well as non-Chamber member businesses.  Please take the time to hear the "pitch" from the volunteers that are going to be asking for your support.  Our community has a long history of celebrations that help remind us of our sense of family, joyfulness, and fun.  Let's remember that history and support the efforts to put these events on.  Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.

Recently a question was posed to me about the relaying of information regarding issues that arise while the State Legislature is in session and should we be taking a political stand.  My answer is fairly short, "There is no knowledge that is not power" Ralph Waldo Emerson.  If the information that is shared effects business and our community, it is important that members are made aware of it.  Now, do we need to do a better job in telling both sides of an issue - yes and we will do our best to do so in the future.  We seek only to inform, action is ultimately up to the individual.

Your Chamber Board is working hard to represent your interests and seek out ways to enhance, improve and increase your business.  We encourage your ideas and seek your help in making our Chamber the best it can be.  Should you have ideas that you believe would benefit the greater good of the business community please send an e-mail to the Chamber (Admin@PoulsboChamber.com).  Keeping focus on enhancing the business climate in the Greater Poulsbo area is a primary goal of this Chamber Board.  We seek your help and ask that you participate in the future of the business community.  Therefore if you haven't attended a Chamber sponsored event this year take time to come to the luncheon, an after hours, ribbon cutting, breakfast or an upcoming Festival.  Engage, find that spark of involvement, and participate!  You will not regret it.

Kindest regards,

Linda M. Lincoln, President

Council Corner:

My transition from retired Public Works Director to City Councilmember:

While I'm the new guy on the block in terms of Council tenure, I've been around the block.  Literally.  When I served as Poulsbo's Public Works Director my responsibilities included water supply, garbage collection, sanitary sewer service, stormwater management, cemetery administration, emergency management, as well as maintenance of the City's parks, buildings and fleet (not to mention the budgets associated with each of these functions).  I worked closely with staff in all City Departments, the Mayor, Councilmembers, other agencies, and residents/businesses throughout Poulsbo.  I've said if you want to know a community inside and out, become its Public Works Director.

Now, as a Councilmember, I welcome the shift away from day-to-day operations so that I may focus with my colleagues on "the bigger picture."  Currently I serve on the Council's Finance & Administration Committee.  We are particularly challenged this year (and next) to balance the City's budget while providing the municipal services our residents and businesses expect of us.  There may be difficult and unpopular choices ahead.  The other Council work group I serve on is the Community Services Committee.  The most difficult issue I anticipate in 2010 is establishing a funding mechanism for future acquisition/development/maintenance of park acreage that will be needed when the recession is over and the City resumes its growth.

In short, I feel I've hit the ground running.  It's been smooth and enjoyable . . . at least so far.

Jeff Bauman

City Council, Position 3

Director's Message:
As we approach Spring and Summer we want to be sure that all of our members realize the events that we will be hosting as a community.  We have listed the major events for you above and on our website.  This is the time to be planning family outings as mini-vacations right in our own backyard.  Check out the parks and fun family events as we try to increase awareness in our North Kitsap area.
Shopping locally should be a priority as well for many reasons.  An article recently came to me concerning "Ten Reasons to Shop Local First" from Local First in Grand Rapids Michigan.  When you shop local:
Significantly more money re-circulates in your local community.  Locally owned businesses frequently purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms.
Non-profits receive greater support from local business owners.
Unique businesses create character and prosperity so our tourism businesses also benefit.
Environmental impact is reduced because of local businesses purchasing and setting up their shops in town centers.  As a result there is less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
Most new jobs are provided by local businesses.
     Customer service is improved.
Local business owners invest in their local community, are less likely to leave and are more invested in the community's future.
Local businesses require little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services.
Competition and Diversity leads to more consumer choices and will ensure innovation and lower prices over the long-term.
Investment is the key word as entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their on-of-a-kind business and distinctive character.

We want all of our members and local Poulsbo residents to use our Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce as a resource.  We have a team of volunteers who will happily look up phone numbers, give you materials or direct you on where to find information on our website and websites for the Kitsap Visitor and Convention Bureau, the City of Poulsbo or many other local businesses.  Shop local, shop Poulsbo!

Front Street Gallery is an artists cooperative based in Poulsbo and showcasing 23 fine artists from all over the Kitsap Peninsula. Originally Kingston Art Gallery, we recently moved to downtown Poulsbo to centralize ourselves in the area. Our group includes painters in acrylic, oil, watercolor and encaustic. Many types of sculpture in wood, clay, soapstone and metal as well as fused glass and metal and glass assemblages are included. We feature several types of photograhy, pottery of different styles and glazes, basketry, jewelry and fine furniture.
Every Second Saturday is a party at Front Street Gallery!  A special featured artist shows new works for the month and its opening is kicked off on Second Saturday with a meet and greet from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A special annual event is the upcoming SlugFest in June. Participants buy "Slug Hunting Licences" and look for hidden artist created collectable slugs around the Poulsbo waterfront park. Much like an Easter egg hunt it is always a big hit with kids and families Our sponsor is Kitsap Credit Union.

The Navy Region Northwest's One Stop Online Shop for Military Community Discounts!

Your business can be on the above website when you offer military personnel a special service or discount on products. This lets the families on our Naval Bases know that you appreciate them and want them to visit your store or do business with you.
Access the website to find out how.

Don't forget that our Chamber website also has a Military Discount page. If you send us the information, we will put it on the site. What kind of discount and how you offer it is up to you. Just let us know.

Also:
The county wide Military Appreciation Day in March went off without a hitch and it seems all that attended were very grateful for the military discounts listed in our Community Guide. Many of the newcomers to the area were unaware of the many things and places we have in Poulsbo.
Our next events coming up are Viking Fest and the 3rd of July. If anyone has an event or function you would like advertised to the Military, get a flyer and/or information to the Chamber by the next meeting.
The next Military Affairs Committee meeting will be held at the Poulsbo Chamber

Office Thursday, the 8th of April at 11:30a.m. Everyone is invited to join the discussion and planning.
