Message from the President, March 2010

Tis the wearin' of the green as it is the month of March.  Mother earth will begin to put on the best show yet as March also heralds in spring and the renewal of the land.  It is my hope that this renewal will also inspire the business community to push past the gloom that is often associated with winter and begin a "renewal" of your business.  Networking is an excellent way to bring new business in the door.  I can not express to you the number of business owners I have had the occasion to meet and learn about their businesses at the various opportunities provided by the Chamber (the luncheon, after hours, events and committee meetings).  As we learn more about each other the likelihood of doing business together increases.

Your Board is hard at work on a variety of projects.  Marketing and Public Relations meets the third Wednesday of the month at 8:00 a.m. and the group is working on a program that will benefit every business member in this Community.  Sounds secretive doesn't it...come join the group and find out more!  Meetings have already taken place for the Americana Music Festival, Golf Tournament, 2011 Annual Awards Banquet and many other groups within the Chamber.  Check the calendar on the Website to find out dates and times so that you too can participate in the building of a better business community.

At our February luncheon and in the weekly update it was mentioned that Senate Bill 6164 had language that would significantly change the way Lodging Tax dollars are used.  Principally, these dollars would be moving away from the primary use for tourism to local governments for infrastructure.  I am happy to report that your Economic Development committee through chair Tammy Matson was successful in communicating with local Senate leaders that Senate Bill 6164 language was detrimental to the Greater Poulsbo Community.  It would appear at this time Senate Bill 6164 will not be voted on during this session.  It is important to the future success of our businesses that your Chamber keeps a watchful eye on issues that concern the greater good of the business community.  Job well done Tammy!  Thanks to all that took the time to respond to the call for action.

Yours truly,

Linda M. Lincoln, President

Getting to Know Our Members:

Kathleen Haag is a Mary Kay Cosmetics representative in Poulsbo, a member of our chamber and a member of our Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. This is her story:

I grew up in the Poulsbo area - born in the old Harrison Hospital and lived here most of my life. Graduated from North Kitsap High School and then went away to college where I received my Bachelors in Nursing and RN. Worked in Home Health and Hospice of Tacoma for many years and became a Nurse Manager for a Home Health Company. I also worked in India for 8 years where I helped set up a rehab center for ex-prostitutes. In 1999 I married Jeff Haag, a widower with three children and moved back to Poulsbo after being away for 20 years.

I started my Mary Kay business when I realized that I needed to do something that would fit into family life better than my nursing job with it's 60+ hour work week. Mary Kay Cosmetics gave me the flexibility to be home when the kids were younger and needed my attention. By working this business I found I could make as much as I did as a Nurse Manager in half the hours. Such a blessing when you want time with your family and friends.

My Business fits perfect into the Poulsbo Community. I am able to help a number of women in this area build their own businesses. I am also able to Beautify the Community by helping men and women look better! J  It is truly my pleasure to be able to have time to invest back into the lives of many of the people who helped me when I was a young girl. This is such a wonderful Community.

As I was growing up I wanted to help women and work in some kind of Church Ministry.

The first job I ever had was to work as a Camp Counselor at Island Lake Camp. I also did a LOT of babysitting as a young teen.

My Dad was my hero as I was growing up. He was such a wonderful example of how to live life with integrity, generosity and kindness. He continues to go out of his way to help us in anyway possible. Still at 92 he is such a great example to our family, friends and everyone around him.

Director's Message
We are starting into the spring of the year.  2010 Community Guides are being delivered and sent out to neighboring Chambers such as Sequim, Port Angeles, Bainbridge, Kingston, Silverdale, Bremerton and Mason County.  The guides have also been given to our local hotels and are being delivered to shows in the Seattle area.  We hope to build on the tourist traffic that comes to Poulsbo in the spring, summer and fall of 2010.  Our downtown merchants, Olhava merchants and Poulsbo Village merchants will also be receiving copies to give to their clientele.

As we work towards the upcoming season we have scheduled our annual Classic Golf Tournament.  We are seeking out a Title Sponsor for the tournament so that we can begin marketing the additional sponsors and teams that we will need to have a successful event.  Last year with good management we were able to clear over $7,000 to help with the day-to-day operations of our chamber and we would like to do even better this year.  This year's event is scheduled for Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Port Ludlow Golf Resort.  Remember that last year Jeff Pryde won the $25,000 putting contest and that could be you in 2010!

The Music Festival has a major sponsor and will again be held at Raab Park with new entertainment, different hours and a beer garden to enjoy the refreshing fall evening.  Please mark your calendar for Saturday, September 11, 2010 to come and enjoy the event.
Sponsorship and booth packets are available through the chamber.

Our Awards Banquet was a huge success and plans are already being formed to make it an even bigger event next year.  Wouldn't it be fun to dress up for the evening and really celebrate our community leaders?  Watch for further information.

Our event committees are growing and working together very well.  If you have ideas that you would like to help implement please join a committee.  The committee meeting times are listed in the Weekly Update and on our Google Calendar found on the Great Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Website.
As always if your information needs updating we need your business to indicate what changes should be made.  Thank you for your help.

Ambassador Corner - Featuring Joni Kimmel

My name is Joni Kimmel and I am very proud to be part of this wonderful community that we are so fortunate to live in.  I am a native of Kitsap county, a graduate of North Kitsap High school and a former Miss Poulsbo 1986.  I have been a Chamber member for the past two years and an Ambassador for the past year.  What a fun time we have as Ambassadors!  The energy and the ideas of the fabulous people in this group, make being an Ambassador such a great experience.  I have made some good business connections and become good friends with many of these wonderful people.
The Chamber Ambassador Group is a wonderful addition to our already great Chamber.  As a Chamber Ambassador, I have had the great opportunity to get more involved in my community.  I have so enjoyed meeting new Chamber members at the ribbon cuttings, the After-Hour events and especially greeting people at the Chamber luncheons.  As a Real Estate Agent in the community my business has benefited greatly from these relations.  As a result, I sold 39 homes last year.
If you are at all interested in the Ambassador program, I would highly encourage you to check it out.  We have so much fun and it is a great way to serve your wonderful community.  We are truly blessed to have such a great place to call home!

Amid all the rough economic news there is also the good news of people coming together to find ways to help and to work together.  In December, in answer to a call for donations to help open a shelter for women and children before the holidays, Poulsbo's  Recreation Center acted as a north end donation center and the response from our community was so immediate, the needs for the shelter were met within a week.

Another incredible bright spot is the new North Kitsap Legacy Partnership that was presented by County Commissioner Bauer and Jon Rose of Pope Resources--that rare public-private partnership that is more common in words than in action. They presented an ambitious shared vision for Pope Resource's 8,000 acres in north Kitsap which would combine public ownership of up to 7,000 acres of open space and 1.5 miles of shoreline, with sustainable economic development and renewed vitality for the Port Gamble community.

This bold proposal could become a catalyst to turn North Kitsap into an outdoor recreation destination while preserving the natural environment we all enjoy, and for perpetuity. The Methow Valley Trail system brings $4.5 million a year to Methow Valley businesses, this proposal could do the same for ours. Our community has a pivotal choice; to help support this ambitious effort to develop a mutually beneficial approach that would preserve most the land as public open space and cluster development in Port Gamble, or take no action and have OPG do a bulk timber sale or sell the property into private ownership in 20 acre parcels. Either way, that choice will be forever.

Though this Legacy Partnership is still conceptual in nature, our Poulsbo Council believes that this vision would benefit our city and unanimously supported a resolution endorsing the ideas Bauer and Rose are exploring. I believe this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and their ideas contain the seeds of an incredible vision for the future of north Kitsap.

Resident Resource Fair Success!!

The Resident Resource Fair held February 22nd was a huge success. The Fair was completely full of vendors and representatives of various chamber offices and was very well attended by large numbers of the newly transferred families to the Navy Base. It was fun and we all look forward to the next one which will be held this summer at the Trident Lakes on Bangor Base. They are expecting over 700 people to attend and will also have a BBQ and other food available for all the participants. Over 100 Poulsbo Chamber Community Guides and Maps were handed out and a number given to the MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) office on base as well.

The next Military Affairs Committee meeting will be on Thursday, the 11th of March at the Chamber office at 11:30a.m. All Chamber members are welcome.
