Message from the President, January 2010
I have found "The Spirit of Poulsbo" and it is good. If you have not had the opportunity to read the latest contribution to the telling of Poulsbo History, I encourage you to go downtown to "The Book Stop" and pick up your copy of this wonderful book written by Judy Driscoll. It is a pleasant read with a down to earth telling of our founding fathers and families. As a history buff I am enamored by the fortitude demonstrated by the families that moved to a rural outpost on the Puget Sound and established a viable community that lives on today.
The Board has started the year off with a bit of a bang. Committee chairs have been assigned and committees are setting meeting times and dates. We will be creating a calendar link on the Poulsbo Chamber Website that will post the meeting dates and times. We hope that you will consider giving some of your valuable time to work on any one of the many committees that need your help.
The Chamber was proud to honor citizens of Poulsbo at the Annual Awards Banquet in January. Congratulations to all the award recipients. I hope that if you didn't have the opportunity to join us this year that you will consider attending next year. Throughout the year the Chamber office accepts nominations of outstanding citizens that make contributions to our community in the following categories: Person of the Year, Pearce Dressel Volunteer of the Year, Organization of the Year, Beautification New Construction, Beautification Renovation and Community Builders. Please do not wait to make your nominations for the 2011 awards. Good things happen in our community all year long.
Best wishes,
Linda M. Lincoln, President

Getting to Know Our Members: JJ's Fishhouse, 18881 Front Street NE, Poulsbo WA
JJ's Fishhouse open 14 years ago in downtown Poulsbo Washington. Over the years Jeff Eagelson has built this restaurant into a landmark in our little town of Poulsbo. The restaurant's signature dish is their Halibut Fish and Chips with their Clam Chowder right up there on the "Most Popular" menu choices. Their staff is top quality and works hard to make every customer feel that they are special!
JJ's offers outside seating during the warm, inviting days of spring, summer and fall. It is a wonderful place to bring visitors to Poulsbo for good food and fun! So for great seafood at reasonable prices invite your guests to try out JJ's Fishhouse.

Director's Message
Each year that I have been your director one of the most gratifying events we plan is our Annual Awards Banquet. This year, with Glenn Anderson at the helm, we honored some truly worthy individuals that you were able to nominate as to their outstanding efforts in 2009. This year's event was held at Kiana Lodge with twinkling lights and sparkly dresses. Glenn introduced his Mother and Father mentioning that his father, Dale, was one of the first Presidents of our Chamber.
We began the evening by installing our new Board of Directors, and thanking special individuals who helped make this year's event a success. This year, Farmers Insurance, sponsored the event and each award was sponsored as well. Thank you to all of the sponsors and chamber members and family members who were able to attend. We also appreciated having Miss Viking Fest, Miss Poulsbo, Miss Kitsap and Miss Silverdale on hand to help with the awards ceremony.
Community Builder Awards were given to Charlie DeWilde for spearheading the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Music Festival in 2008 and 2009. The award was sponsored and presented by Lynanne White of American Rose Bridal. The second Community Builder award was given to Donna Strep as she is committed to the betterment of growth everywhere in our community. The award was presented by her good friend Donna Etchey from the North Kitsap Herald.
This year's Beautification Award went to Bill Austin for his Renovation of the Landmark Building. Glenn Anderson, Donna Strep, Todd Tidball and Pat McFadden all presented the award from Edward Jones.
For the first time we honored an Ambassador of the Year, Allison Morrison from Land Title. Allison was selected because of her dedication to promoting the chamber, providing assistance at Chamber events, identifying and recruiting new members and welcoming members and guests to chamber events. This award was presented by Mary West from The Snow Group, and president of the Ambassadors in 2009.
Organizations of the Year went to Poulsbo Noon Lions Club for their accomplishments at Fish Park, and the many youth groups they sponsor. Mike Regis and Carl Osteller accepted the award which was presented by Robert Doane of Acupuncture and Wellness Center. The second award went to Fishline for their abilities to serve the community with a full-scale food bank, overnight accommodations and transportation assistance. This award was presented to their Executive Director Karen Timken by sponsors Debbie and Mark Nazarino from Video ME Productions.
The Pearce Dressel Volunteer of the Year Award went to Carly Michelson for her tireless work in making the Poulsbo Street Dance happen in 2009 (as well as 2008). Tammy Mattson and Rob deFillipo from Tizley's Europub were excited to present this award and have Carly win since they we also part of the Street Dance.
Last, but not least, the Person of the Year Award, sponsored and presented by Stacie Pike was given to Kathi Forsee. Kathi Forsee is the heart and soul of Viking Fest and has worked closely with the city, chamber and other entities to make Viking Fest a success for the last 13 years. In 2009 she also asked other Viking Fest board members to assist in making the Poulsbo 3rd of July Fireworks happen! It did and we are pleased to honor Kathi with this award.

Again let me say what a pleasure it is to be able to be a part of this yearly awards ceremony

Local Choices Guide
is committed to being the premier visitor resource guide for the North Olympic Peninsula, in both our printed format and on the web. 30,000 paper copies will be distributed annually in hotel lobbies, visitor centers and local businesses. We'll check out and replenish the distribution in these locations bi-weekly. If you would like more information on how to be listed in our annual guide, please call us at 360-379-0330, 360-385-2330 or e-mail info@localchoices.biz
Local Choices is designed with the tourist in mind. When you travel to a new place, don't you look for an easy way to find a restaurant, a bookstore, a theater? Or how about a doctor or dentist for a sudden ache or pain? We make it very simple to do that by:
Providing a two or three-line description of the businesses
Classifying and color-coding each business under their respective category and location
Placing each business on an easy-to-read map of their town and each town on a map of the entire area
And putting it all together in a colorful, attractive brochure visitors can carry with them.
As an added bonus, each business will have alink on our website - www.localchoices.biz
Kitsap Tours will be starting with tours in our area this month. The tour company will pick up passengers from the Seattle-Bainbridge Ferry or tourists who are staying in our area. They will tour Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula. Board their comfortable 14 passenger minibus for a tour of Bainbridge Island, Suquamish, Poulsbo, Port Gamble or other hidden treasures including The Bloedel Reserve. Poulsbo will be the lunch stop area with a two-hour break for lunch and shopping. Go to KitsapTours.com for tour and pick-up/drop-off options.
Anthony Smallbeck: The Smallbeck family has been in the Poulsbo area for a very long time. We're the ones that failed to get a street named after them like our more extroverted relatives.
I work in Seattle but volunteer in the community, so I felt it was high time to join the Chamber - especially so I could get a good fresh copy of the monthly newsletter each month rather than continue to get the not-so-gently "used" ones from the Sons of Norway Lodge or Viking Fest!
My family consists of my wife, two children and lots of rabbits. I volunteer at the Sons of Norway lodge once a month helping with Vern's breakfast and spend alot of time working with Viking Fest. |
Ambassador Corner - Featuring Stacie Pike
I would like to take this opportunity to give a brief testimonial about our Poulsbo Chamber Ambassador's group. This is a fantastic group of volunteers that give their time and offer their expertise at the luncheons, the after hours, the ribbon cuttings, and various other Chamber events. I have been a Poulsbo Chamber Ambassador for over a year now. At each event and with each project, I thoroughly enjoy spending time with the other Ambassadors.....we have genuinely become comrades. In addition, I look forward to meeting our Chamber Members (new members and veteran members alike) at the functions. Being a part of this program has given me the little push I needed to become more involved in the Chamber and a bit more involved in our Community. For several years, I have benefited countless ways as a Residential Loan Officer with my general membership. This group has now evolved in to more of a family relationship for me. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested. What I thought would be another obligation, when I joined, has turned out to be a real source of fun for me.
