Getting to Know our Members:
Sherry Appleton
I am a 28-year resident of Poulsbo. I served eight years on the Poulsbo City Council from 1985 through 1994. I got into politics in 1984 by going to City Council meetings after the City Council was recalled, except for Ed Jensen and Bob Burns. They in turn appointed Curt Rudolph and the interim city council. Because of a land use decision that our neighborhood won, I was encouraged to run for the Council, which I did and won handily. I loved helping people and working on the issues that affect each and every one of us in our day to day lives. During that time: we approved the fire hall, the Marine Science Center, worked on cleaning up Liberty Bay, created a downtown business association, established a reserve fund and stabilization account (the city because of embezzlement issues only had $10,000 in reserves - when I left we had $500.000.00; so many other issues and started the ball rolling for a tree city, and Viking Avenue improvements. From 1992 until 2004, I served as a Commissioner with the Washington State Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights and as a commissioner on the Commission on Judicial Conduct appointed by Govs Lowery and Locke. Now I am a Commissioner on the Sentencing Guidelines Commission and Co-Chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee. During my career, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Washington Cities, on the Northwest Women's Law Center Legislative Committee, board, and vice-chair of the State Women's Political Caucus. In addition, I was elected in 2000, to represent the 1st commissioner district as a freeholder and serve with 20 other elected freeholders to review the Kitsap County Charter. In 2004 I was elected to the State House of Representatives. I have worked hard for the district by bringing many capital dollars to Kitsap County including those for Olympic College, Kitsap Mental Health, the Poulsbo Marine Science Center, The Children's Discovery Museum in Bainbridge Island and many more infrastructure projects. Along the way, I was selected for the Western Legislative Academy by the Council of State Governments - West. I joined 38 other Western Legislators for intensive leadership training in Colorado Springs. After that I had the honor and privilege of being one of 40 candidates chosen for a Toll Fellowship (from all three branches of Government across the United States) which continues leadership skills, and communication skills in a very intensive 6 day course in Lexington, KY. Currently, I serve as Vice-Chair of State Government and Tribal Affairs; am a member of the Health and Human Services Appropriations Committee and am on Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Along with the Sentencing Guidelines Commission I was just appointed to The Washington Council on Aging and hope to bring a fresh view to that group. The bills that I have worked on and sponsored tell a great deal about me as a person. I have worked on: 1. Payday Lending issues for five years; ferry issues including getting rid of the lock-out (multiple cars traveling together); working to get rid of an expiration date on ferry passes; ferry user discounts and freezing ferry fares for two years; and many other gas tax issues such as distribution. 2. Body Piercing: making sure that such procedures are licensed and regulated. 3. Aquifer Conservation Zone on Bainbridge Island 4. Universal Health Care - so that hospitals and clinics don't absorb uncompensated care and everyone is covered, either privately or publically. 5. And managing the geoduck resource, and many more. I believe strongly that all of us should give back something to the community to make it stronger - economically, socially, and environmentally. I will continue to advocate for the people in my district as long as they want me to do so with great pride and honor. I can only say Thank you for giving me this privilege. |
President's Message - Fall is In The Air
I was sitting out on the deck tonight looking at the parched lawn, thinking that the rains are just around the corner and the chore of weekly mowing will return. The flying ants are aimlessly looking for food knowing the end is near. My wife who grew up experiencing the endless summers of California, is already tired of hearing me commenting that fall is in the air. She has begun talking about the upcoming football season and the aromatic comfort food aromas of Stew and Cioppino that will fill the air as we root on the Seahawks. Even though the evening temps are getting a little cooler, I can't forget that our best weather of the year comes in September. The second annual Americana Music Festival will be held again on September 12th at Raab Park and if we get weather like last year, it will be a huge success. October brings the Business expo at the Zone Sportsplex , which will also feature a candidate forum for the City of Poulsbo elections. Business has been improving this summer as the recession is coming to an end, so let's use our momentum to carry us into the fall and Holiday season.

Council Corner - Becky Erickson
How do we make business grow in Poulsbo? We need a concise business development plan to bring and retain businesses in Poulsbo. Often called strategic visioning, a business development plan should be created with input from our existing business owners, the City of Poulsbo (as a major land owner), the Port of Poulsbo, existing business associations and property owners within our community. The development of this plan should be created by using the expertise of economic and land planners in a stakeholders setting. The Goal: create a business development plan that we could use for business recruitment. One of the greatest costs associated with business development is uncertainty. If the City of Poulsbo can create a level of certainty regarding our vision for economic development we stand a greater chance of creating an environment that supports business stability and growth. For our Downtown Core: We need to recruit an anchor business to locate within our downtown. Some have suggested that this business could be something like a Trader Joe's. I would think a more appropriate anchor business would be a small boutique hotel (50 rooms) including a restaurant and small conference rooms. Without an anchor business, we will continue to have small business turnover within downtown. Additionally, the business development plan should address re-development of Anderson Parkway to improve parking, an analysis of vacant properties for development and a way to grant better public access to our waterfront park and the Port. For West Poulsbo and Viking Ave: There is a group of citizens that have property interests in West Poulsbo that are coming together to create a vision for their neighborhood. We should support these property owners and include their work within our business development plan. We also need another anchor business for West Poulsbo. Our anchor business used to be auto and RV sales. We hope that the auto sales will return soon, but it is obvious that this business is very cyclical. We must diversify our risk by seeking out a secondary core business for west Poulsbo. For 10th Ave: We have an anchor business now moving into 10th Ave. Harrison Hospital (Thank you, Ed Stern. Ed was instrumental in bringing Harrison to Poulsbo.) Private property owners are moving forward with planning for the properties along 10th Ave. We should support this activity by streamlining our ordinances and through revision of our zoning codes and the uses associated within our zoning codes. For Olhava: Support Olympic College as it moves towards expansion of educational opportunities. A new group is forming called the Friends of Olympic College. Work with this new group and with existing educational administrators to increase course offerings at the College. Kitsap County needs an institution that can grant a bachelors degree in Engineering. This should happen at Olympic College, Poulsbo. Additionally, we need to support the creation of a new zoning code called Office, Commercial Industrial (OCI). With the use of this zoning code, light industrial businesses have the ability to maintain a show room for direct retail sales. Our business development plan is only as good as how it would be implemented. To implement the plan, we should "incentivize" business recruitment by developing an internal business development group that would actively market the plan to new key businesses. This group (Poulsbo Economic Development Coalition - PEDC) would actively recruit businesses into our community. Who would be included in this group? Business owners, city officials, existing business organizations, neighborhood representatives, financiers, and private sector land developers. What kind of incentives? Be more flexible and creative with our building codes without sacrificing the character of our town. Research, develop and implement key financing opportunities through the use of subsidized loans. Lending is critical to business development. These subsidized lending opportunities already exist through State and Federal programs. We need to implement this type of lending locally for our community. Actively promote our economic development plan by approaching key businesses. The PEDC would create a timeline for activity and written objectives for operation. So often we commission studies and plans and then never implement them. Make the PEDC accountable for business recruitment using the business development plan as its guide. We need to create a plan to make business grow in Poulsbo, and we need to start this work now. Becky Erickson, Poulsbo City Council

Director's Message
Excitement is on the rise for the 2nd Annual Americana Music Festival. Our committee of dedicated members has worked hard to make this an even bigger event than last year. Come to Raab Park on Saturday, September 12, 2009 and enjoy the fun, music and visit with friends.
On the front page of our Website are three very important forms that you may want to download and print off. Currently we are signing up businesses for our 2010 After Hours schedule. I know that you think 2010 is still quite far away but it will be here before you know it.
Next you will see the nomination form for Board of Director elections. Candidates must be Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce members in good standing and willing to give of their time during a three-year term. Six positions are available this year so nominate yourself or someone you think would make a difference and contribute to the improvement of our Chamber.
Last is the 2009 Awards Banquet and nomination form. This is your opportunity to nominate someone who you feel has made a difference in our community.
Please review all three forms and then make your voice heard.

New Member Spotlights:
Crimson Cove is a family owned and operated smokehouse located in Poulsbo Washington. This company was created out of the passion that Mark has for the Northwest. As a pilot in the Navy my job took me away from my home state of Washington and I missed such foods as northwest style smoked salmon. I wanted to share this unique taste with my wife, a native of Chicago, so I experimented with different smokes and brines trying to create that Northwest flavor I missed. I finally achieved the taste I love using wild salmon brined with wine and smoked with the best mixtures of Northwest woods. As the years passed, we shared our smoked salmon and cheeses with friends. We were continually encouraged to sell our smoked foods so others would enjoy this unique taste experience, thus Crimson Cove was created. Last year we made the decision to lease our stand alone facility off of Stottlemeyer where we now have the capacity for national distribution of our products. Though we are not there yet we have seen a sustained growth over the last two years and stand positioned to do just that. Jody and I also have two girls 7 and 11 we love this unique community and want it to keep its vitality and sense of closeness we all share and enjoy. Dancing Bow is owned by Jane Elizabeth Landstra, a violin, fiddle and piano teacher in Poulsbo and at Island Music Center, Bainbridge Island. Jane states that her Celtic trio (aka Nordleik for Scandinavian occasions) plays, and arranges music for weddings, dances, all celebrations corporate and small. Their Website www.countrycapers.net has references and details. Jane looks forward to being a part of the chamber as she is semi-retired from teaching in the North Kitsap School District.
Time Savers LLC is owned by Allison Hanson. Allison has been in business for about 7 years and does mostly "house cleaning." She is active in the community and graduated from North Kitsap High School.
ADM Architecture was created and founded by Aaron D. Murphy in the spring of 2009 Mr. Murphy is a Poulsbo resident with 15 years of experience in the field of architecture. Murphy has been the project architect for millions of square feet during his career.
ADM is a local architecture firm in Poulsbo that offers a broad range of both commercial and residential architectural services. ADM is aware of the potential range of services and involvement in your project and therefore adjusts its proposal scope to meet each individual's need on a project by project basis. |
