Getting to Know our Members:
Foundation for Wellness Professionals
What in the World is Acupuncture, Really?" Have you ever found yourself asking these questions - What is Acupuncture? How does it really work? Can it help me? Can it help anyone? While Traditional Chinese Medicine treats more people across the world than Western Medicine, it is still widely unfamiliar to many of us in the U.S. leaving us wondering what is the purpose of this ancient medicine? If you are like most Americans, you are struggling with fatigue, sleeping disorders and some form of chronic pain. Many of us attribute these symptoms to aging. Common, right? This is where we begin understanding the origin of Chinese Medicine.
What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine which is gaining more and more popularity in America. During a treatment very thin, solid, hairlike needles are inserted at specific points on the body. The stimulation of these acupuncture points affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It triggers the release of the body's internal chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins, which have pain-relieving properties.
How did it originate? Beginning well over 3,000 years ago, the purpose in the development of Chinese Medicine was to enable someone to live as long as possible, retaining the highest degree of vitality and clarity. This is because the royal families of China demanded from their doctors a medicine that would allow them to lead their armies into their 90's, procreate into their 90's, and lead a productive life right up to the very end. Simply meaning we should remain as strong and healthy for as long as we can only to die quickly and suddenly with out the burden of a long painful disease ridden death. In Chinese Medicine this goal is termed, 'compression of morbidity', which simply means minimizing the time one is incapacitated before the end of life comes. This is a goal the Chinese are highly successful at achieving. Therefore, the belief of living with the aches and pains of aging is nonexistent. Leaving us with still another option of relieving common pains and serious illnesses.
What can it treat? Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of common ailments, just a few examples are: Headache & Migraine, Fibromyalgia, Allergies & Sinusitis, Depression, Back, Neck & Shoulder Pain, Hip/Leg & Sciatic Pain, Hypertension, , and many more. It is also effective in treating women's health issues, including Infertility, Menstrual Disorders, Polycystic Ovarian Disease, Endometriosis, and Menopause.
How are my symptoms diagnosed? The most respected method of diagnosis in Chinese Medicine is "Pulse Diagnosis" or interpreting the flow of blood in the radial artery at the wrist. Unfortunately this method is a lost art with very few practitioners in the world competent in its immense subtlety. The uniqueness of this method is that it is anatomically based. If used correctly, the pulse can reveal anatomical problems such as urinary tract infections, kidney stones, ovarian cysts, bone spurs, gall stones, varicoceles, sinus infections, gastric or duodenal ulcers, coronary blockages and a host of other physical aliments.
What does Acupuncture feel like? Prior to their first treatment, many people do not believe that acupuncture can be painless. Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed which enable the skilled acupuncture practitioner to place a needle with little or no sensation. People often report that they feel some warmth, pressure, or dull aching and that the feeling is unfamiliar but relaxing. Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick hair. They are solid, and nothing is injected through them. So they have very little in common with the "monster needles" most people remember from their childhood. All needles are sterilized and disposable. This medicine is available in thousands of Chinese Medical clinics throughout the United States. But unfortunately, when most Americans think of Chinese Medicine, they usually only think of the pain relieving abilities of acupuncture. Acupuncture is just one small part of the large body of medicine known as Chinese Medicine. The main aspects of Chinese Medicine are the creation and maintenance of superlative health by using Chinese herbs and acupuncture. More and more Americans are discovering the incredible benefits of Acupuncture, and are choosing the natural approach to health care. Most patients seek out Acupuncture for chronic pain relief, and the results are nothing less than miraculous. Pain relief usually occurs within seconds after the needle insertion, and long lasting relief over a series of treatments is at least 80%. Nicole T. President's Message - Enjoy the fun and sun of Poulsbo!
As we progress through the summer months I again reflect on the reasons I love living in Poulsbo. I know that some young people grow up in a small town and decide to live elsewhere but my wife and I love Poulsbo too much to think of anywhere else as home. We are enjoying this summer so much with the wonderful weather (even if there is no air conditioning), the beautiful flowers and the fabulous events that Poulsbo is offering to the public.
Hopefully everyone will be back from vacations to experience the 2009 Street Dance presented by the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, August 15. It is not final yet as to how many local businesses are sponsoring the music stage and the beer garden but we appreciate all of their support. Soon you will see posters around town with those wonderful lanterns enticing you to come and spend the day in Poulsbo. This year Front Street will be closed beginning at 10 a.m. to allow the retail merchants to put their wares out on the street and greet locals and visitors alike as the street becomes a "pedestrian mall." Starting at 5 p.m. on the corner of Front and Jensen the music and dancing will begin. Come join us for the 2nd Annual Street Dance in Poulsbo!
Right after school has gotten into full swing we have one more event to finish off the summer. Our 2nd Annual Free American Music Festival will happen on Saturday, September 12th in Raab Park. Entertainment will be provided by Chele's Kitchen, Dewgrass and our headliner Vicci Martinez. Since the weather has been ordered - only sunshine allowed - please join us under the covered tent provided by Suquamish Clearwater Casino. There will be face painting, pie eating and games for the kids. The Kiwanis will have their BBQ all heated up and ready to go for sandwiches of all kinds. You can enjoy some ice cream, visit all of our members booths and relax for a free, fun-filled day. The event will benefit StandUp for Kids and the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce.
See how much fun we have planned for you. Come and enjoy every minute of it!

2009 Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic
This year's golf tournament was a wonderful success as we branched out to Port Ludlow Golf Course, with 1st Security Bank as our Title Sponsor.
An event like this one would never be accomplished without everyone helping. I would like to start with our Lunch Sponsor, Hill Moving and our Registration Table Sponsor, Holiday Inn Express. Our Hole-In-One Sponsors were Courtesy Auto Group and Harrison Medical Center. Our hole sponsors included Edward Jones, Suquamish Clearwater Casino, Windermere, Kitsap Bank, Anderson Accounting, Land Title, Busby's Burgers, Acupuncture and Wellness Center, Tim Ryan Construction, Costco, North Kitsap Herald, Bayside Engravers, Martha and Mary and DEF Productions. Our green sponsors were Timberland Bank and The Brother's Power Sports. Mike's Car Wash sponsored the Women's Longest Drive and Kitsap Credit Union sponsored the Men's Longest Drive.
Raffle prize contributors were Edward Jones, Timberland Bank, Bill Gooding, The North Kitsap Optimist Club, Poulsbo Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express, Hearts and Homespun, Marina Market, Bank of American Home Loans, The Snow Group, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Valley Nursery, Sheila's Portside Restaurant and Bar, Poulsbo Book Stop, Costco and Windermere-Joni Kimmel.
Four restaurants donated to the 1st Place Low Net and Low Gross winners. They were Sogno di Vino, Whiskey Creek Ranch House Grill, Burrata Bistro and Tizley's Europub.
Thanks to Poulsbo Flower Shoppe for the beautiful arrangements that added color and a touch of class to the event.
We also had some excitement as Jeff Pryde from Poulsbo made three putts to win $25,000. That started the day off right and it only got better with a great course and weather that everyone enjoyed.
Don't forget to save the date for next year - Thursday, July 29, 2010. You could be the next big winner. |
Council Corner - Dale Rudolph
New City Website Our goal for this site is to provide direct services to our citizens that are easy to find, easy to navigate and creates a direct forum of public information. Each department is now responsible for maintaining their pages, creating a more efficient, up to date Website. This new Website is a very useful tool for keeping up on the progress of major projects, as well as, for conducting business with the City.
Comp Plan Update The 2009 Draft Comprehensive Plan now enters its second phase of public review. A new draft, incorporating the modifications identified by the Planning Commission was released July 1, 2009. A draft supplemental environmental impact statement was also released concurrently. The City's Draft Comprehensive Land Use Plan is a policy and legal document that reflects the community's desires, needs and aspirations for the future, all within the context of the goals and requirements of the Growth Management Act (GMA). A Planning Commission public hearing is scheduled for July 28, 2009 and will be continued to August 4, 2009. City Council workshops are tentatively scheduled for August 19 and 26, 2009. Additional City Council workshops and a public hearing(s) are expected to be held in September 2009. One topic that I think may be of particular interest to Chamber of Commerce members is about Downtown Poulsbo. Policy LU-1.6 "...At this time, the City plans to initiate ... a Town Center Neighborhood Plan. ... intent is to identify a planning boundary, mixed use, commercial uses, and residential density opportunities. It also will include identifying strategies and recommendations for neighborhood connectivity, pedestrian amenities, design guidelines and streetscape amenities.' I am hoping that the community will buy into the concept of the Downtown Poulsbo Town Center. A center is defined as "a complete, unique and livable community", which is characterized by variety - choices for living (condos + subdivisions); jobs/work spaces (walk or commute); efficiency - efficient use of land, land value and infrastructure; identity - built on historical character and landmarks; and community - enhance a sense of place and community. What makes a center work? The answer is: compactness - (including walkability, connectivity and transit friendliness); and diversity - activities that allow living, working, shopping and playing. Downtown is very close to being a true, complete Town Center. The question for the community and investors to answer is what kind of development/redevelopment we are willing to accept toward achieving a Town Center, especially in the Jensen Way, Iverson Street and 4th Avenue. Some elements that would be required to make such a Town Center successful, include allowing mixed use (residential/retail/business), density, and pathways/trails and transit that will connect Downtown, Poulsbo Place and Poulsbo Village, and provide the jobs, services, and amenities of a center. It is my personal belief that the Town Center concept is great for our business community to provide nearby customers, 365 days a year. Balance this with an expanded Port of Poulsbo, and you would have a thriving, vibrant center. Dale Rudolph, Poulsbo City Council Position #6 |
