Brock's Interiors - Brock and Nancy Baker
Getting to Know Our Members - By Brock Baker
How did you get started in your line of work? After several months of looking for the perfect job out of college I took a job selling floor coverings at a small store in Bremerton to make ends meet while I continued looking for a "career job". After being there almost a year the owners closed down the company and we were all left looking for work again. While out of work my wife and I decided to start our own flooring company in Poulsbo. I've been doing this kind of work ever since. What do you see yourself bringing to the community? In the early days of our company we realized that a lot of potential customers were going to the nice design showrooms in the Seattle/Bellevue area because that type of place did not exist on our side of the water. From those early days it was our goal to build a showroom in North Kitsap where customers could easily view a huge array of products and design options in a comfortable environment rather than the traditional overcrowded warehouse. I think we have achieved our goal. Every week customers tell us how great it is to have a showroom like this on our side of the water. What experience or vision sets you apart in what you do? Our vision has been to provide our customers with high quality products at the best prices around, but what separates our company is the way we approach the process. Our goal is not to sell, sell, sell, but to help people build the perfect design for their home and within their budget. Our designers are not on commission and our customers will never feel like they are "being sold". Once the design is complete we still give them a price competitive with the box stores, we just offer our customers a lot more in the process. Another major difference between our company and our competitors is that we employ our installation technicians rather than subcontracting them. This has allowed us the opportunity to secure the very best technicians in the area, and know that every job we do will be done to our high standards. How do you reach your customers? We do some advertising, but nothing compares to the value of past customers who are thrilled with our service for bringing in new customers. What is the first job you ever had? My first job was moving irrigation pipes and pulling weeds at a large pumpkin farm during the summers in high school.
If you could only subscribe to one magazine or publication for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
I rarely read magazines, but when I do I like to read Sports Illustrated. I am a big sports fan.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I never really locked onto one profession, but over the years I remember wanting to be a professional baseball player, a dentist, a business executive, and a commercial pilot. What is your favorite part of doing business in Poulsbo? I love living and working in Poulsbo. There is such tight-knit, small community feel here, and yet we are close enough to Seattle to enjoy the benefits of a big city as well. There is not another city anywhere that I would rather live in. Who would you consider to be your hero? I would say that a hero of mine is St. Patrick. A few years ago I wanted to learn more about who he was, and I was blown away to learn about the sacrifices he made and the hardships he endured to take the life changing message of Jesus to the people of Ireland. As his message began to take root the entire country began to experience positive changes everywhere. St. Patrick was a man who chose to give up a life of ease and comfort and use it to make a difference in the lives of others, and in doing that he transformed an entire country. What is your favorite quotation? "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand." Philippians 4:6-7a |
President's Message - Make Hay While The Sun Shines As I write this, I am looking outside at the vibrant blue sky, pristine calm water and listening to the birds singing. This is the perfect scenario to get me motivated for the day and works just as well as a piping hot cup of coffee. Having grown up in the area and considering this weather is not typical, I need to take advantage of it. Yes, there is that annoying list of things we need to do around the house every year like mowing the lawn, weeding, painting etc...but there are also the fun things to look forward to like cooking burgers on the grill before going for a long walk or launching the boat for a slow cruise around the bay. I was always brought up that the work has to be done before you can play. It should be the other way around because most retirees have said that they are so busy they don't know how they ever had time to work. You are probably wondering where I am going with this, but I feel that life and business run very parallel. I have talked to many business owners that say they are working twice as hard this year for the same amount of income as a year or two ago. Sometimes we have to do the hard , annoying things in order to be able to do the fun, enjoyable things. The secret is working smart, not hard. After 52 years I am still trying to achieve that. I remember watching my older brother invite his friends to go water skiing, but they had to mow our lawn for him first before they could go. Humor aside, it is time to get back to basics and remember how you got to where you are today and how your success was achieved and do those things. We all need to swallow our pride and do the hard ,annoying things to get to the fun exciting things. Retool, reorganize, revisit your business plan and talk to your colleagues to see what they are doing . Now is the time to make hay while the sun shines.

Council Corner - Connie Lord
Hello again! We survived a cold snowy winter, a wet soggy spring, an unsettling economy, and what seemed like endless gloomy news. But by Jove, we made it into summer. With the economic downturn (to put it mildly), and impacts from the Hood Canal Bridge closure, we all deserve some much needed fun and prosperity this summer. I'm happy to report our city is in good shape and we are weathering the economy fairly well. Prudent fiscal policies have held us in good stead, and we are committed to keeping the belt tightened. Much needed improvements on Viking Avenue are starting thanks to being ready to act when grants were available. This should help stimulate growth and encourage visiting Poulsbo. A gateway kiosk is planned with a vehicle pull off area to check out "you are here" and "here's what to see and do". Back to summer fun at some of the numerous events in Poulsbo: 3rd of July Fireworks Show is right around the corner. FREE "Summer Nights on the Bay" will soon start with live music at Waterfront Park - fun for folks of all ages. Don't miss Tuesday nights - July 14 & 21 and August 4 & 11. Enjoy FREE G or PG "Movies at the Park". These outdoor showings at Waterfront Park dusk on Wednesdays July 9 - 29. The second annual FREE "Poulsbo Street Dance" Saturday, August 15th. A smash hit last year and we get to do it again! Live music, dancing, food, "Arts by the Bay" - a party for all ages! Poulsbo will really be hopping and shopping! Free family fun is a great boon to our community, especially now. So don't forget the 2nd Annual Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Music Festival at Raab Park will be held on Saturday, September 12th to finish off a great summer.
Due to many supportive businesses and Poulsbo Parks and Recreation, there are a variety of special events, family activities and programs available. Join in the fun. Just think, we are a tourist destination --- stick around Poulsbo and enjoy what people travel here to experience! The final comment I'd like to offer is my heartfelt thanks to the business community of Poulsbo. You all are very appreciated and respected. I am acutely aware of the struggles you face in these uncertain times. I know I speak for the whole council and mayor that we are committed to assist you in any way feasible. Your generosity and participation even in tough times is inspiring, and underscore that Poulsbo is a true community where we all help each other as we can. Is there any better environment to live in? I think not. Well, we all hung in there through the doldrums of last winter. I don't know about you, but with the sun out, long days and so many things to look forward to and be thankful for, summer 2009 is just what the doctor ordered! Until next time, Connie Lord, Councilmember/Deputy Mayor |

We have 20 employees, we are open 7 days a week from 11a.m.-11p.m. Matt (my son) is also working with us. We are 100 yards away from the marina and have a great view of the water and Olympic mountains. It is a beautiful little tourist town and we can't wait for all of you to come see us!

Declare Your Financial Independence Day
As a nation, we celebrate Independence Day this week with fireworks, picnics and parades. But someday, you may want to declare your own Financial Independence Day - and here are a few ideas to help you get started. First, pay yourself first and consider automatically moving some money each month from your checking or savings account to investments appropriate for your individual goals and objectives. Also if appropriate for your risk tolerance and time horizon, include some growth-oriented investments in your portfolio. These investments will fluctuate in value, but over the long term, quality investments have the potential to help offset "down" periods and provide growth potential. Next, try to reduce your debts. Eliminate the smallest debts first, pay down high-rate credit cards and avoid new loans, whenever possible. You'll likely have to work hard most of your life to achieve your own Financial Independence Day. But if you are able to achieve that goal, you might feel like setting off a few fireworks yourself. This is Pat McFadden, your Edward Jones financial advisor located at 19740 - 7th Avenue NE, Poulsbo WA 98370. Phone 360-779-6450 or email Pat.McFadden@edwardjones.com |
