"WHY PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL AGENTS ARE AGAIN IN DEMAND" by Neal Kellner, CM TRAVEL 4 FUN
I entered this wonderfully crazy business called travel - in early 2006. At the time, many people suspected that I was crazy... since Internet-based travel planning seemed to be "the future in travel planning", and the Internet was already crawling with Internet travel agencies.
I am a futurist... thus I looked ahead into the not too distant future when travel professionals would be a rare (and needed) commodity in the market place. With this in mind, I set out to create a "new world vision" in travel agency operation and travel planning services. That vision became the start-up business that I named CM TRAVEL 4FUN, a business name reflecting my mission statement: "See them travel for fun". When I was starting my business, the mass exodus of brick and mortar travel agencies was winding down, with most already closed - or closing. In addition, at this time a number of sham companies had set up MLM Card Mills which generated thousands of graduates claiming to be "professional home-based travel agents". Most of these new home-based agents got their MLM "degrees" in travel - just so they could book travel for themselves and friends cheaply... they had no intent of running a full time professional travel agency. To complicate things still further, travel is an incredibly poorly regulated business, (both nationally and in most states). Thus, not surprisingly, a lot of unethical Internet travel agencies popped up in 2006 and 2007 providing travel services on the cheap. These folks generated predictably ugly outcomes for the travel consumer... and a bad rap for the entire travel industry. By mid 2007, to most outsiders, (and many in the industry), the future seemed pretty bleak for all types of travel agencies. This assessment resulted in still more professional agencies closing up shop or consolidating, (including many online agencies). In my 3rd year of business... the September 2008 economic collapse hit. My business faltered badly for about 3 weeks, but then came salvation. My competition raised prices, cut staffing, and reduced their already almost non-existent customer service. At same time, airlines and other travel suppliers began going out of business leaving travelers stranded. Suddenly, planning travel had become an incredibly unreliable and unpleasant experience. Travelers were thrown to the wolves, and were being eaten regularly. People began to recognize that they needed professional help planning travel - and there I was - with the right service at the right time. By April 2009, my business was on fire, and continues to expand today. Will the good times last? I believe - "yes" - because there is a real need for professional travel services and industry insider-knowledge which grows each day. The world of travel has changed yet again. I close with the latest reason why many travelers are going to need CM TRAVEL 4FUN (or another travel agency) to plan their travel services in 2009: "SECURE FLIGHT". We have all been hearing for nearly two years about the switch to HDTV and the coming need for passports in order to travel anywhere outside of the USA - but most people have never seen or heard the phrase "SECURE FLIGHT". Those two words describe a 2005-created Homeland Security - TSA regulation affecting air travel... which goes into effect at about the same time that you are reading this article. This new regulation is being dropped like a bomb on the traveling public on 6-1-09. A large percentage of travelers who do not use a professional agent to book their travel after 5-31-09 will encounter a growing list of serious problems when flying. Travelers will discover that their online airline ticketing is not useable when they arrive at the airport, and/or will find that the tickets they purchased with air miles are rejected at the airport. Worst of all, some travelers will find that they have become "security lepers", and will be not be able to fly at all! Full-enforcement of these regulations is scheduled to begin just days before the Thanksgiving holidays. Happy holidays will be hard to come by this year for travelers who did not use a travel agent to help navigate them through this travel minefield. President's Message -
Poulsbo is a great place to live or visit if you are too busy to cook.
I remember growing up in Poulsbo when there were only a few restaurants in town. Downtown there was the Viking House, Idle Hour and the Olympic Inn. Later came the Poulsbo Inn, Papa's Pizza, Mitzel's, Golden Dragon, The Diner and Campana's. Before you knew it we had the classic creations of That's a Some Italian, the always fresh and vibrant JJ's Fish house, the Bayside Broiler and south of the border treats from Garcias. Our little Viking community that once knew only Lutefisk and Pickled Herring had started to become a destination for hungry diners. Of course, with the advent of the food channels on cable TV, and the influx of people moving to Poulsbo from different parts of the planet, our taste buds have become much more adventurous. Now you can visit the unique Mor Mor Bistro and Bar, or get a taste of Europe at Tizley's Europub. Enjoy Voodiez Lounge, Poulsbo Woodfired Pizza House, Stella's Pizza and Pasta, Taprock Grill, Sheila's Portside Restaurant and Bar, Whiskey Creek Ranchouse Grill and Whiskey Creek Steakhouse in Keyport. The momentum has continued into this year with the influx of two new Italian Cuisine Restaurants with the big city feel of Burrata Bistro and the intimate experience of local wines and wood fired pizza at Sogno di Vino. BBQ can be found at Busby's Burgers & Q plus TATU BBQ appears on our downtown sidewalks to often serve his delicious sandwiches. The Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse serves more than just coffee and Jak's Café offers soups and sandwiches that will make your mouth water. For those busy working families who have to eat and rush to their kid's ball games, the solution is the prepared meals that you can just grab and cook at home from Central Market, What's for Dinner and Dream Dinners. All this is making me hungry so off I go to find something to eat. I don't think that is going to be very hard to do in Poulsbo.

Council Corner - Linda Berry-Maraist
Our newspapers are filled with bad news about the economy; local businesses are struggling; teachers are getting pink slips; County offices are closed one day a week; and the Fire District is cutting back. Poulsbo is better off than many jurisdictions, but we too are seeing declining revenues and facing tough choices. Families are learning to make do with less. So too must municipalities. We're in this together-we need to find solutions together. You can see the evidence of the strength of our community: another great Viking Fest celebration, successful food drives for Fishline and other volunteer-led events. A new, bright spot is the Poulsbo Trails Committee, which is developing a plan to improve pedestrian/bikes links and make Poulsbo even more outdoor friendly. (Please share your ideas by taking the trails survey at www.cityofpoulsbo.com.) As a City Councilmember, I look forward to the challenges and opportunities our community faces, because my belief is stronger than ever in the value of partnerships to find the best solutions in the most cost-effective ways. If we want to re-energize Viking Avenue's commercial core, we need to forge a partnership and work together with the business community and property owners. If the North Kitsap community wants the legacy of 6,000 acres of permanent open-space with trails and wildlife corridors proposed in OPG's String of Pearls, we need to work with OPG before that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is lost forever. Tighter resources call for creative new ways to work together. I believe government needs to get far better and braver about collaborating and developing true private/public partnerships. Simply talking about it gets us nowhere; we need to open the doors, roll up our sleeves, and invite new partners to join us. It is pretty clear that there are limited financial resources all around. Extremism wastes those limited resources; we need the centrists to lead by working for solutions that benefit our entire community. Tough times are no time to sit on the sidelines. New Member Spotlights:
Henry Smedley/John L. Scott Real Estate
I grew up in Camas, Washington where my parents were employed by the Crown Zellerbach Paper Company. I became interested in chemistry and paper manufacturing as a result of working with my dad as he progressed through "paper school". As a result, I attended Washington State University and graduated in 1973 with Chemical Engineering and Business Administration degrees. I started a 35 year paper manufacturing career in Port Angeles, Washington that took us to facilities in Oregon, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Connecticut and New Jersey as my management career progressed. I have four children, three daughters and a son. Our desire to be close to our kids and the love we have for this area brought my wife, Laura and me to Poulsbo. I have the very good fortune to work with my eldest daughter, Kelly Simkins as Real Estate Agents with John L Scott, Poulsbo. Our business model is simply to delight our clients through superior customer service. Customer focus, superior service and continuous improvement processes are skills I acquired from manufacturing management that we apply directly to our real estate business. Additionally, since I relocated nine times, I can draw from my personal real estate buying and selling experiences to proactively make the buying and selling process as stress free as possible for our clients. My passions are golf, fishing, duck hunting, fast cars and Washington State Football. I look forward to meeting you while engaged in these or the Chamber activities I plan to participate in.

Sue Daniels - Ambassador of the Month
Sue Daniels is our June Ambassador of the Month. Sue started Miss Barks A Lot because of her love for animals, especially dogs. It is the goal of Miss Barks A Lot to spend time caring for and loving your pets. Be assured that while you are away, you can be stress free and have peace of mind that all is well. Call Barks at 779-2842 for services and for what we do.
In Miss Barks A Lot, about 90 % of my work consists of working with animals, I often do not see or talk to my clients 'humans', and I believe we need some human contact. Because of that I joined the Chamber and then the Ambassador program because I feel there is a need to work in the local community, to assist in small business growth and to get to know business owners along with their business and let other businesses see who and what I do. I have enjoyed meeting and becoming friends with many people that I would not have even met if I had not taken this leap into the Chamber lifestyle. I have truly enjoyed being a part of the activities that the chamber has opened up to me and my business. I look forward to a future in continuing as a Chamber Ambassador.
