Getting to Know Our Members - Sabine Straight - Maplebrook Retreat and Kitsap Getaways.
Born and raised in Germany I graduated from hotel and restaurant management school followed by many years of working in the hospitality industry. I arrived in the United States in 1989 and worked several years in the restaurant industry - starting as Manager and quickly took over multiple restaurants as an area manager. I received a diverse education from the companies I worked for and cultivated my skills for organization, cleanliness and professional conduct. Growing up with parents who were self employed I got the urge to work for myself. In 1999 I took my $50 vacuum, printed some flyers and business cards and off I went as an entrepreneur forming "Sabine's Cleaning & Errand Service." My business started growing like "gangbusters" and soon I was doing business from Seattle to Tacoma. There was not only the need for housecleaning - we also organized homes anything from closets, kitchens, to garages, we found a place for everything and everything in its place . Fixing up homes for sale and making them look their best .....what Sabine's offered became so much more complex that we became "Sabine's Lifestyle." Soon I moved to Poulsbo and started again in the Kitsap area. Providing excellent service in a small community made it easy to grow my business - word of mouth was the main source of advertising . Excellent customer service skills, honesty, a great crew and of course great cleaning skills made my business successful. Our clients love to come home to a clean home. The current economy let me think of another service Sabine's Lifestyle will be providing in the near future, while a cleaning service is a luxury for some or a necessity for others and your budget might not allow to hire cleaning service - why not attend a class where you will be taught to streamline your cleaning equipment and how to efficiently clean your home and protect your investment - without using all your precious time. More to come soon! Managing Vacation Rentals came along as a second business so that is how Kitsap Getaways started. My goal is to provide service with a personal touch. Booking on line is easy but I believe, especially in this economy everybody wants to make sure to get the best for their dollar. That's where I come in - building a relationship with potential guests to make sure they get what they are looking for, a home away from home.
I love to read Seattle Magazine, Real Simple and Body and Soul because they present new ideas health, beauty, fashion and everything to make life easier in your home.
You can reach Sabine at 360-649-3294 or www.kitsapgetaways.com or email to [email protected]

President's Message - Going to Work for Yourself? Plan Ahead
Are you thinking of striking out on your own and joining the growing ranks of the self-employed? It is an exciting - and possibly a little scary - prospect. But you can remove some of the fear by doing whatever you can to prepare yourself financially for life as an entrepreneur. What steps can you take? Here are a few to consider:
- Save as much as you can. Ideally, you would want to have a couple of years' worth of living expenses saved before you go solo. But that's a pretty tall order for most people. And if you have a spouse earning a good income, you may have less need to put away a large sum. Nonetheless, it's almost always a good idea to save as much as you possibly can before becoming your own boss.
- Think twice before cashing out a retirement plan. If you are leaving a job that provided you with a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan, you might be tempted to cash out your account to help pay for the transition to the world of self-employment. However, try to avoid this move. By liquidating your employer-sponsored plan, you will face early withdrawal penalties if you are younger than 59-1/2, and income taxes, too. Just as importantly, you will be depleting a valuable resource for your retirement. If at all possible, try to find other sources of income. For example, you may want to consider a home equity loan; interest rates on these loans are usually competitive, and your interest payment may be tax-deductible. Be aware, though, that you will be using your house as collateral, so make sure you can afford the payments.
- Consider opening a new retirement plan. Once you make the jump to self-employment, start thinking of what type of retirement plan you might want to choose. Fortunately, you have some attractive options that offer both tax advantages and a wide range of investment choices. If your business has no employees except yourself and possibly your spouse, you may be able to establish a SEP IRA or an "Owner-only" 401(k). If you will have employees, you might want to consider a SIMPLE IRA or a "Safe Harbor" 401(k). Your tax adviser and investment professional can help you choose an appropriate plan.
- Pay yourself a regular "salary." Depending on what type of business you are opening, you may well experience an uneven flow of income - which could, at times, force you to dip into your long-term investments to help you meet your daily and monthly expenses. To avoid this potential problem, consider paying yourself a regular "salary" out of your business's earning. It's crucial that you live on a pre-agreed amount-even if the only person you have to agree with is yourself. Too often, entrepreneurs use up one month's "paycheck" and then have nothing left in the next "down" month. But if you have the discipline to stay within the income you've allotted yourself, and your business succeeds, you should eventually build up a cash cushion that can be used for emergencies or investments.
Your career as an entrepreneur can be rewarding in many ways-and you'll enjoy it even more if you make the right financial moves.

Director's Message
We are excited to say that our project of updating member's names and emails will soon be as complete as currently possible. We rely on all of you to send us any updates should you move your office, change a phone number or email address.
In the Month of May we will be having Ribbon Cuttings as several new downtown restaurants open so please watch you Weekly Update for those dates and time. We also have it listed on the Monthly calendar in this newsletter. EVERYONE is invited. This is a good way to show your support for new businesses.
We will not be having a networking breakfast in May and that is primarily due to the Memorial Day weekend but we will be at Sheila's Portside Restaurant and Bar in June.

Council Corner - Kim Crowder
May, what a beautiful month to be in Poulsbo! Locals and tourists alike are enjoying our amenities and patronizing our wonderful businesses. I know we have all grown weary of these economic times, yet I often watch in amazement how the business people of Poulsbo reinvent themselves as times change. The City wants to help in any way it can. As most of you know, the Poulsbo City Council uses a committee system to split our workload and shift our individual expertise to the best use. This year we added an Economic Development Committee comprised of myself, Ed Stern and Becky Erickson. Meetings are the 2nd Wednesdays of each month at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Our April 8th meeting was outstanding - at the invitation of Ed Stern, we had presentations by the Washington State Community Health Facilities Funding Authority and the Washington Economic Development Finance Authority. The WEDFA provides low interest loans to finance capital expansion. WEDFA funds the loan with their bond issue which provides some of the tax benefits governments have when borrowing money. For more info visit www.wedfa.wa.gov We want to promote and retain quality business in our city and value your input. Please join us at our meetings so we can build our community together. Best regards, Kimberlee Crowder Poulsbo City Councilwomen (360)-779-3336 |
April Chamber After Hours - Habitat for Humanity Home
Thanks to Josh Dougherty and everyone at Habitat for Humanity for hosting our April After Hours. It was so exciting to see a new home almost completed for a deserving mother and son. We also were able to learn about the "working plan" that each qualified candidate must commit to before moving forward to get their home. What a worthwhile program for those who need additional assistance to get into substantial housing for their families.

Hello Poulsbo! This is Lisa Feldbau, the REAL ESTATE SPECIALIST at the John L. Scott office right here in the breathtaking, historic town of Poulsbo, Washington. I am so excited to be a member of the Poulsbo Chamber, as it will help me to further bond with my community. Being involved in Real Estate strengthens my ties with you, my extended neighbors! I have been in Kitsap County since 1979 and was born and raised in Poulsbo. My grandfather moved from Norway to Poulsbo during the depression, bringing the family here. My husband Ryan and I have been together for almost 10 years and have a 5 year old daughter Ava and a 1 year old son Evan. We recently moved to Indianola and have fallen in love with its atmosphere. The people are amazing, just like my hometown of Poulsbo. Real Estate is not only a profession but a huge passion of mine. After buying a starter home, flipping and selling it, buying vacant land and building a home, I realized that I really wanted to help other people experience the same thing. Joining the award winnings sales team at John L. Scott was an easy decision for me and working there enhances what I do with numerous extended training hours. Buying and Selling Homes and Land are my specialties and I can make it happen for you! I am never to busy for your referrals so remind your friends, family and associates that Lisa Feldbau goes "Beyond the Sale"....and that I am always available for coffee!

Julie Fritts I have lived in Poulsbo for about 20 years now and love the green surroundings. Helping others keep our wonderful area green by educating them about natural alternatives to chemical fertilizers is a passion of mine. Many people wonder how in the world did I decide to become a worm farmer? About 8 years ago I was at a BBQ picnic with friends, Lew and Lorri at their church in Oregon. Lorri had her sister in law and myself digging for worms in the church yard with cups and spoons from the kitchen! She needed worms to feed her tropical fish. Lorri, the ever frugal ministers wife talked to some fishermen friends and they showed her how to collect worms and keep them in a worm box. Our conversation progressed and she mentioned that some people make money with worms, and they were good for composting garbage. Upon our return home started doing some research and purchased the first worm factory. I have learned much about composting and worm growing. I decided to start a business to share knowledge and help other people make smart decisions on how to compost and help keep our planet green. It is the way of the future, going back to nature.
