Randy ChafeGetting to Know Our Members - Randy Chafe

For 25 years Randy Chafe was a Tug Boat Captain and finally decided that he really wanted a career that would allow him to be more directly involved in his own community.  Randy is now the owner of Shoplocalbiz.com, a locally owned company that brings local businesses to the attention of our community.  He does that by giving them an Internet presence through creative web design and Website maintenance and inclusion in our online business directory listings by category and location of their business.
Randy stays in constant contact with his customers and encourages them to keep their websites fresh with new photos and interesting content.  Referrals from regular happy clients are keeping Randy's business moving forward and current with the latest technology.
Growing up Randy wanted to be a park ranger but settled for working on sport fishing boats in Pismo Beach, CA as his first job.  Now he is loving the business he is in and sharing a sense of community with family, friends and clients.
Randy lives by his favorite quote:  "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a futures."  Jer29:11 (NIV)

 Raffle Table Nov. 2008 Luncheon
Just when you thought it was safe to put away the snow skis, wash your car and fire up the lawn mower, March weather came upon us. Have you ever wondered why February weather is so nice? I think it is because lifelong retired Washington residents head south for the month to seek warmth. You would have to be one of those lucky people to know what I am talking about. The good news is April is upon us and soon the sky will turn blue, the moss will retreat and the rhodies will once again remind us of their natural beauty. The bad news is that the grass and the weeds will start achieving relentless growth and quickly remind us that we now have more than just a day job, but also a weekend job. There is a remedy to all this; golf. Yes, I am talking about the ancient Scottish game that turns kids into adults and adults into kids. The game that you are about ready to give up and then suddenly you sink that twenty foot putt that has eluded you all day. With your renewed hope you have to return for another round.  I hope that next round will be the annual Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic on July 23rd at Port Ludlow. We are still looking for sponsors and golfers and will be offering a discount if signed up before May 15th. Remember, like life, the early bird gets the worm.

Director's Message
Our new format for the Monthly Newsletter, Weekly Update and Luncheon Reminders are up and looking good.  To have these three pieces of correspondence appear quickly on your screen with all the pictures in place follow these simple directions:
Go to "Actions" in your email program.  At the drop-down menu go to "Junk E-Mail" to get to the next drop-down menu and choose "Add to Safe Sender List."  You will only have to do this one time!

As Executive Director I remind you that business owners join the chamber for the networking opportunities and the benefits available to members.  We encourage you to bring your cards to the Chamber Offices to be displayed for all to take and use your services.  We also suggest that you come to each and every Chamber event with your business cards.  In addition you should leave each event with new cards from fellow members to increase your business circle.  At the end of April check how many new contacts you have made through Chamber networking by counting the news cards in your file.  I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised at the increase in your contact.
In the Weekly Update for April 9th we will have information about our new Health Benefits.  The Chamber will be providing informational sessions with the agent throughout April, May and June.

FROM BIG TOWN TO SMALL CITY

With the signing of the deal between the city of Poulsbo and Harrison Medical Center for a $25 million-plus project that includes the purchase of land at 10th and Lincoln, the construction on a regional cancer-care center along with a Prompt/Urgent Care Hospital here, the time will be soon to review how the process went, and what was learned.

That this was no ordinary 'developer-proposal' review process for the city as has been common for the first 100 years of our history, but rather an elective economic development 'partnership' of sorts, and ground-breaking in many respects, is telling. It tells us that in order to achieve the next level of build-out in Poulsbo and at the same time pay attention to citizen input on what we want to preserve, encourage and sustain, it is not enough anymore to react to simply what comes our way, but rather that we will have to go out and solicit those businesses and enterprises that we feel are in our collective best interest. In other words, we have to be an active participant in the economic development game, and sophisticated about it as well.

This then marks the true break with our past, the 100 year anniversary of 'self-governance' in 2008 being coincidental. We now must move therefore from a big town to a small city, with all the attendant 'street smarts', financial and analytical skills and most importantly, with community consensus attended to. In this fashion, we can go out and compete with not only the likes of a Gig Harbor, but go toe-to-toe with those centers on the east-side of Puget Sound that go after 'the best and brightest' in desirable company relocations and start-ups. Olympic College-Poulsbo campus was another such example here of a successful effort in that regard, back earlier in this decade.

We need to insure that we are up to the 'game', have a strong moral and visionary compass by which to guide the effort, and that we bring the community on board. This starts with an active and on-going dialogue with our citizenry, and importantly, our Chamber of Commerce. Then to our 'next one-hundred years', and a sustaining vision of who and what we will be when we grow up!
