You don't seem to hear as much about direct mail these days -- especially with all of the talk about social media and email marketing -- but is it really R.I.P.?
 
I believe direct mail is still an important part of your marketing mix, but rising postage costs really force you to re-evaluate what you've done in the past and what you'll do in the future. Are you following marketing basics so that direct mail works for you? We'll review some marketing "rules" in this issue!

Top 5 Tips for Direct Mail Success!
 
  1. Mail to the right group of prospects. Find prospects most like your top customers so you're mailing to someone who will be interested in your services or products.
  2. Use an attention-getting headline or message on your outer envelope, self-mailer or brochure. Your package needs to stand out among the rest of the mail your prospect receives. Say it loud!
  3. Make it easy to find your offer or call-to-action! Nothing is more frustrating for a prospect to be interested in your service or product but they're unable to find your contact information or what they should do next!
  4. Your sales letter or self-mailer should immediately stress what the benefits are to the prospect. While telling your prospects who you are and what you do is important and reassuring, what they really want to know is "What's in it for me?". 
  5. Use the magic words...like you, free, special, limited-time, benefit, easy, guarantee, etc.

Creating a website
   
Creating a website can be fun! It's exciting to see your vision become a reality. But, before you put it all together, there are some important questions you need to ask...and answer! 
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What is the purpose of your website?
  • What do you want visitors to do? Contact you? Order a product?
  • What is your website design budget?
  • Who will write the text and what will you say?
  • What images or photos will be used on the website and where will they come from?
  • What audio or video capabilities will you need?
  • How will you market your site?
  • What is your timeline for the site to go live? 
Once you've answered those questions, you and your website designer will go on to create a visual map, page sketches and storyboard, generate a timeline, organize your text/image files and develop a marketing plan. 

You'll then be ready for the fun to begin!
