In this issue, new Medicaid transfer of asset restrictions will change the way that  Hoosiers and their families must plan for elder care.  The bad news is that after October 1st, 2009, helping a jobless family member with money to prevent a foreclosure may jeopardize Medicaid payments for care in a nursing home up to five years later.  The good news is we now can be certain that legal plans for asset protection done now will not be penalized under harsh new rules.  Indiana legislators responded to a public outcry and helped limit the worst aspects of an ill-conceived federal law passed in 2006.  We'll give you the latest and some tips to follow.

On a more personal note, I begin to reflect on my my mother's recent elder care and end-of-life process.  So many clients have shared their stories with me and they helped prepare me.  Perhaps you will find something of significance to you in my story.

We welcome your feedback, appreciate your referrals and encourage you to forward the newsletter to others who could benefit.

Sincerely,
Scott R. Severns,
President
